Hi lisa, my name is Orville Wedderburn I am one of those people trying to start a social networking website... The thing about it is that I know nothing about making one myself. I do marketing so I know how to get around the world of business, I learn a little about web and came up with an Idea that will have a facebook impact in record time, over 20 million in less that a year. Like how you have myspace, hi5 and facebook running the same race my idea will be like youtube, not with videos but that it will have no major competitors, it will be free and it means alot to you. I really need the help please link up...

Thanks

HI lisa,

I think that you don't understand Ning. Ning allows you to edit beyond many other hosts. And although it does take alot of work it's very rewarding. And you are wrong about not having your own domian on Ning. Ning also allows you to place adsense ads on your social network. Be careful about what you say about certain hosts.

Just thought I would add to this thread. As Lisa said Ning is good for very small niche communities and a great idea. Although it could be the case that you get depreciated in terms of google ranking because you are all hosted from the same domain i.e. Ning.com. I run a number of social networking websites on their own domains. Yes I used a third party software package to build them and this is probably the best way for larger niche social networking websites. I also create social networking websites with basic customisations for people for a fee. Although not for 4 or 5 figure sums. Maybe I am under quoting myself, but to me the prices for the time I spend setting up the networking website seem to reflect reality. Having said all that your blog post was about a year ago and social networking packages have vastly improved since then. I have my favourites ;o). I will not post any links here as I do not want to self promote, or promote any other web package, as it would not be polite, and it does not fit in with webiquette :o)
Lastly. Lisa FYI. At the end of your video, you do a V sign. In England that is highly offensive as the V is the wrong way around. The palm with the V means peace, but the back of the hand with the V means something completely different. Ah well, cultural differences, I know it was not intentional and was well meant :o)

Cheers

I am very familiar with the software Lisa described and she was accurate about Ning. It is a hosted application and makes a lot of sense in many cases. They host thousands of social networks.

An excellent choice with respect to owning your own content and having it on your server is Joomla using the Jom Social Component. I think this is a better choice for most social networks than PHPFOX. You end up with a world class Joomla site and a social network combined.

Hi Lisa, It's me again. As I've said in another comment, I'm creating my own social networking website. I am a web developer and I'm creating the website in my free time. It's a niche network site for education (targeted at both teachers and students). I've searched a lot on the web and there isn't anything like it. Apart from social networking features, the website has a lot of extremely helpful tools which will make teachers' job a lot easier. I have believed in this project from day one and it's taken a lot of my time to develop. However, now that it's almost finished I'm not so sure if it will work. I'm wondering if I've wasted 2 years on this project. I can't imagine myself becoming rich, it seems like such an unrealistic goal. Even if I think that this website is good, I can't imagine it becoming popular and getting the amount of money that I've been dreaming of for so long.
I was wondering if you could tell me how realistic it is to expect to at least make a million $ from a social networking website. I'm loosing all my drive and I hate myself for putting so much effort into my dream which can be so unrealistic.
Thanks
