Have Your AdSense Earnings Spiked?

October 5, 2009 · 35 comments

In August, I wrote about the addition of third party network advertisers to the AdSense program.

For AdSense publishers this just means there are more advertisers who can compete for ad space on your site.

So the ads displayed are not just from the AdWords program anymore.  They can also come from pre-approved, certified networks that are working with Google.

If you have a website that advertisers want to appear on, this can work to your advantage as they outbid each other for real estate on your site.

To view and manage the ad networks that appear on your site, login to your AdSense account, click the AdSense Setup tab and select Ad Review Center.

You can watch the video about this below. (Can’t see the video in your e-mail or RSS reader? Visit my blog to watch it.)

Ever since Google announced this change, my earnings have skyrocketed.  I published a video about my record earnings in July, and October looks to shatter that record by a mile.

Can I be sure this spike is due to the addition of the third party ad networks?

Not really.

Since I have no way of knowing the source of my ads (AdWords or a third party network) and which ads get clicked, of course I cannot confirm that my spike is from this change.  However, it’s hard not to assume this has something to do with it.

The Stats

In my six years as an AdSense publisher, I’ve never experienced an earnings spike like the one I’m having now.   Also, this spike was very sudden. In the past, any upward trend was very gradual.

September’s earnings were up nearly 20% over August, and if my earnings keep this current pace in October, this month will beat September by 5-10%.

Here’s another point I want to make…

In the last two months, both my traffic and click-thru percentage (CTR) have remained the same.  However, my eCPM has gone way up since Google’s announcement.  To put it simply, that just means I am earning more for my traffic (clicks, impressions, etc.)

And if my speculation about the third party networks coming into play is right, it all adds up. (Pardon the pun.)  If there are more advertisers bidding for space, that will drive up the average cost per click (CPC) of the ads and increase the amount you can earn per click.

Of course, I’m doing a lot of speculating here, and perhaps this post is premature.  But my increase in earnings over the last two months cannot be ignored — especially since my earnings trend was pretty flat during the first half of the year.

So now I’m curious.  Have you noticed an increase in your earnings since Google started allowing third party networks to advertise on your site?

I currently don’t use Adsence, so I am not in a position to report any findings.
However, your spike may also be an indication of advertisers starting to feel confident and spending again – which is good news.

I noticed a small difference in late July on one of my sites, but mostly it has stayed the same.

Oops. I’m sorry. July was before all this started! :)

So no, I haven’t noticed any difference. I’m glad you’re experiencing more success though, Lisa!

Good post Lisa.

I noticed a spike for September of clicks all of a sudden being worth 10x what they had been before (a click before on a page being worth $0.10, and now worth $1.00, for example), but now in October the clicks seem to be getting small again, and some of them before that were $0.10 are now $0.05, for example. I am still figuring it out though, but September was my first month I made the $100 threshhold in one month to get a check two months in a row! :) So far October does not look like it will be the same though, because clicks are the same, but PPC is not as high.

Hi Lisa,

My Adsense earning are up by perhaps 10-20% (I’ve not calculated the percentage, but let’s just say I notice the extra dollars!). I manage a second Adsense account for a business client, and have noticed that many days his earnings are double what they used to be.

I have decided to experiment with reinvesting some of the extra money in advertising to build up traffic for keywords that my site doesn’t rank so highly for. Note, this hasn’t increased my Adsense earnings, and I’ve not been doing it for this reason (which I think would breach Adsense terms & conditions), only to build up the sites profile in areas where other sites blitz mine in the search engine results. Of course, selling a few extra affiliate products wouldn’t go amiss!

Do you think that advertisers specifically target YOUR site and then bid higher, or is it more “in general” that the advertisers might be interested in bidding higher to get more impressions/clicks?

I definitely think higher-trafficked sites have an advantage with AdSense because the advertisers may bid more for placement. But I believe it could be a little of both.

Yes, I’ve seen a spike in September. My best month ever. October looks good as well. I did some optimization with ad placement so I thought that was it. But it maybe a combination of ad placement and Google adding third party networks. Regardless I love it.

Hi Lisa, I noticed an 8% increase in CPC for September as compared to August. However, my overall adsense earnings increased by more than 25% because somehow traffic to my blog increased by about the same percentage when I posted more often. I guess adsense earnings is really a function of the amount of traffic one gets right?

I’m really glad to finally have the chance to share information here, I’ve been a lurker for 2 months now. Thanks by the way for the really helpful tips you give, I really appreciate them and always look forward to new posts from you! I found your site last July when I was researching about the Thesis theme and saw the video you made about it. I will be getting it soon. ;-)

I have really been blown away by my recent Adsense earnings. My earnings doubled in August, and stayed at that level in September and are still on track for October. My traffic increased a bit, but no where near doubled. My click thru rate also stayed the same. The only difference I’ve seen is the eCPM.

My earnings definitely went up. When I first started with Adsense I got a lot of clicks… then it kinda died down to very few. All of a sudden my clicks went through the roof recently. When I had a look at my ads I noticed there were a different variety of ads. My neiche is quite small and I noticed the same ads were getting shown over and over.. I presume because there aren’t many relevant ads. All of a sudden there are all these new ones. Do you think it’s because of the extra advertising program? Now there’s simply a larger number of advertisements for adsense to choose from?

I must say that yes, even my meager adsense earnings have increased, along with impression earnings. I admit that I have done some toying with the placement of some of my ads, so perhaps that has something to do with it as well. I really don’t care which it is, I just hope it continues to rise.

@Powerpoint Templates – Try adding adsense to your home page, since it’s the page people when come in contact with first. It’s also good to integrate it among your content, between posts for example. Also use various formats, try plain links, text ads and images (although use images sparingly). People can’t click on what they can’t see. I know the idea of them leaving your site is a hard to accept, but I figure it this way, they’re going to leave one way or another, at least with adsense you get the opportunity to make a little money because of it. Best of luck.

As you assume, so do I. My earnings have rised but I do not know why. Not exactly. But I do know that I’m earning more, however, I gained only few percentages in traffic but much more in eCPM. I think the internet is growing exponentially, so it is perhaps the very best assumption that the advertisers have to pay more for me showing their ads.

Sometimes it’s hard for me to believe that because I do also think that if there are more advertisers they have to pay less… My logic is now crawling at a snail’s pace :-)

Hi Lisa

Again great information as always.

I’ve read this news too and can only say it’s about time… The Google Adsense program was starting to fade a little, with more and more inovative advertising platforms springing up almost on a daily basis.

Google needed to act, other wise it was in danger of becoming a little out-dated with it’s methods.

This from an avid Google fan.

I have seen a small increase in my earnings, but nothing major. But, I have noticed my CTR and earnings are usually very low on Fridays and Saturdays, compared to the rest of the week. And these 2 days have been abnormally higher than usual lately. Not sure if that has anything to do with this Google change though.

I actually believe that it’s the content I have to share on my blog that really matters, however.

Hi Lisa, first of all, congrats for your website and job carrer, Im a lawyer and I think your making actually as much money than me & eaven more with all your sites together so you really sems to do a great job ! I’m writting you because my girlfriend told me she tried google adsence before and that she NEVER received one single penny eaven if she putted it on three websites (that dont exist anymore or only part of it it has a lots of pages last year ) for instance :http://www.sims2action.bravehost.com/ she had a few thousand visitors there, she is actually on youtube at sims2action, she was working hard on the vids, has more than a hundred suscribers (165 to be exact) 82 videos a few + 39K views but stopped after youtube cancelled a few videos of her because she used some music she though it was legal (complaint of a jealous fan) ? anyway my question is: is it because google ad sence needs 15$ to sent a check ?, how do you keep a track of what happens ? does is start counting again every week or so if you dont reach the minimum ? thanks for the tips

Very nice Lisa. Yes just as competition from business helps the consumers because prices get lower, competition from advertisers help the publisher because the price or advertising amount paid gets higher. Competition is a great thing unless you are the one competing. :)

most definitely a true statement. however, because my website is still growing in traffic levels, the increase in earnings is clouded by traffic growth. but when i do break down my earnings per click it makes sense that the price per click to the adwords publisher is being driven up by the competing businesses. this is great for publishers like us!
