I did something similar for a PC hardware company that does not have an affiliate program: in return for one of their external drives, I agreed to run an ad for them on my site for one year (and write a review).

Do you promote affiliates on this site? If so where are they?

Any of the ads here on this site are affiliates, Ms. Freeman.

Thanks James. Got it, I wasn’t sure if she meant PPC ads or individual products. :)

This video you made Lisa has opened my mind to some new things. Most people think that if you’re an affiliate for some company that you actually don’t have any contact with them but it’s just as good as working for them.
I mean if Internet didn’t exist and you wanted to work as an affiliate, you would work promoting bedsheets or cosmetics from door to door. I look at affiliate marketing like that, not maybe as direct as door to door advertisement but surely similar. Thanks for the vid!

As someone who’s been in the Internet marketing industry for over 5 years via the corporate route, I can totally back up this awesome tip. From my experience, some of the companies I’ve worked at in the past have been willing to negotiate and customize their affiliate payouts depending on an affiliate’s volume and quality. It makes perfect sense: The affiliate channel carries a lot less risk than other marketing channels from the perspective of the company. Whereas margins can be volatile when your own marketing dollars are at risk, affiliate programs have fixed margins built in (the affiliate takes all the risk). For this reason alone, companies are oftentimes willing to fight to keep their top performers. Another tip: If you’re willing to sign a several year exclusivity agreement with right of first refusal should you sell your business, you can often negotiate even more favorable terms.

Thanks again, for your insightful and innovative advice. I’ve run across several companies that I wanted to promote, but since they didn’t have an affiliate program, I ended up promoting a comparable, but less favorable product. I’m going to re-evaluate my practices and restrategized for next year. Where do you come up with this stuff? How did you get to be so smart? :-)

Nice video. I recently contacted a company who I linked to on my website to ask if they had an affiliate program. They said no but had been contemplating starting one and asked if I was interested. I may check with back them and see if they would be interested in advertising on my site until they get the program going (if they ever do).

Thanks again!

Participating in an affiliate program can be quite profitable. The key is to find the unexploited niche and exploit it. Software industry seems to be a great niche for starting an affiliate business.

This is so true and not just for asking for money, I started a site on a hobbie of mine and asked a company for something I could review they sent me some free dvds that i could review and then some to give away in a contest!

it is true never be afraid to email a major company and ask!

So I finally got a chance to check this out. You know, I think it funny you mention this. Its exactly what a few major companies do when times are tough to try and get more from their contracts. For instance, I know that a golf company was making negotiations with their contractors to try and lower their prices because of tough times. It was great and I think what you did was golden :D Pretty nice house eh? :D

I’m on holiday for 3 months and after reading your comments about Nori’s web site, I may start one for Berlin, this place is off the hook. Jamaican brotha’s running around with Rasta style hair speaking German , what a phenomenal place. It is truly multi-cultural, turkish , asian, african and et al.

Anyway, love your site, and your teaching’s …keep up

Hi Lisa,
Have you thought about doing a “How Much Can You Earn From Your Website?” video/feature for the newer ‘e-preneurs’? I’m going to jump off the fence here and say that the first real business milestone of any website is achieving the national minimum wage for it’s owner. I’d be interested to know what percentage of people who start websites each year ever achieve minimum wage from ‘e-preneurism’, but if the statistics that 9 out of every 10 business websites fail close within their first year, then at the most, only 1 in 10 people will ever make their website into a full-time job. I think you could push the free Google Keyword Tool more, as well. All of my websites started with a long Google Keyword Tool session…
You continue to be an inspiration, Lisa, keep it all up!
Daniel :-)
