People often ask me what strategies work best for AdSense. I always tell them that it varies from site to site and experimentation is key.
What works for someone else’s blog may not work as well for yours.
Funny that I’ve been suggesting experimentation for years, but lately, I haven’t really done much of it. I guess I’ve become too comfortable with my earnings.
Note to self: There’s always room for improvement!
Well, I was browsing my Twitter feed last Wednesday and came across this tweet from @AdSense…
It made me realize how long it’s been since I’ve experimented with color palettes on my units. The tweet links to an AdSense help page on Google’s site. I must say, I’ve never read this page before.
Most of the information is common sense, but I was glad I came across this tweet because it reminded me that I should switch things up every now and then to deal with ad blindness.
So I did just that. I changed the palette up a bit on the right navigation of 2 Create a Website.
Of course, I’ll never really be able to confirm if any increase or decrease is a result of the change, but if I see an overall increase then this change certainly won’t hurt anything right?
How often do you switch your color palettes (if at all)?
Bhuboy de Leon says
so, when you want to experiment and change the color, do you do it for all the ads in the website or just 1 ad at a time? thanks
Lisa Irby says
It changes it for all units.
Bhuboy de Leon says
Okay thanks a lot

Lisa I jealousy you. I have a blog that I have taken my time to optimize and traffic is hitting on the blog every day about 500 – 800 daily.
The problem is that when I check my Google Adsense, I see some times $5 or $11 but this is not the kind of money I was expecting after spending over $500 on this blog. Please can you check this blog and let me know what am doing wrong.

I have never changed my colour palettes before. I was using the default colours from AdSense, but its not working good for me. For the first time I am changing it today. Hope it will increase my CTR.

I have changed mine to see which one stands out a bit, but I always end up using the blend and maybe change a few colors with the words

I have Recently Got adsense ads.Yet now i haven’t tried for changing color.I want to make sure about their functioning and how they work with my site.

I almost certainly would not have contemplated this was helpful two or 3 months ago, yet it’s interesting how age evolves the way you respond to things, thank you for the blog post it absolutely is pleasing to see something sensible here and there rather than the conventional rubbish masquerading as blogs and forums on the net. I have played around with my Adsense palettes quite a bit and finally settled on trying to have them closely match the color scheme of my site. People seem more likely to click on an ad that isn’t obviously an advertisement.
How do you?™ Answers says
We have been testing a lot recently whether it is better to have the colour stand out such as reds titles or to blend in more we the content, what do you think is best?
Sunil from The Extra Money Blog says
I have on 2 websites, one worked for the better, the other for the worst. The inertia involved with “why fix it when it ain’t broke” is hard to overcome, but you really do not know until you test. the web is very forgiving, and we all LOVE that about it…

Hey Lisa,
hope to get around with color palettes. I’ve never tried that before.

Exactly lisa…I tries blended background (White) with text colour red or bright blue…see a big improvement in click through rate….It is a really good trick..
Dave Schulz says
I never reall change palettes. After all it is about blending.
lisa says
Changing your palettes doesn’t mean you can’t blend. I like to keep my background the same so it still blends but a slight change in the title color may make your ad pop a bit more but the overall ad still blends.

I remember seeing that several months ago, but never made much thought about it. I just changed my adsense to use multiple palettes, so I’ll have to see how it turns out.
One thing I did notice, for some reason I couldn’t find the multiple palette option in the new interface – only the old interface. Unless I wasn’t looking in the right location.

When you say about the AdSense colour combinations I would like to share the best combination I have found so far. It is the colours between #0033CC to #0000CC works great. As the link appears at the bottom I dont want to put it again. However, like you said it always depends on many factors. But it is always good practice to change things and see how each combination perform.
Iroko says
Thanks for sharing, I have never done this on any of my site, what I do often is complete removal of the ads whenever I am not going to post for a long time, I do this often this days, I do want my readers to think the blog was made for adsense! Is that approach good enough?
Erika says
Lisa, I did recently test a different color on my site, it was an alternative blended color, brown. I ultimately went back to the blue color I’m using now because it performed just a little better. If I go with another color it would be a complete contrast to my site and I feel like I have enough going on. For now I’m having a blast testing different sizes and placements and images vs. text using channels and includes – woohoo. You know I’ll keep you posted 😉 Thanks to some of the other commenters for other tips I hadn’t thought of trying.

It’s good to always make a change or two, because us as people get use of seeing the same images and become immune to them.
So give your Adsense a face lift and see what happens.

A very effective registration method for trial software is to randomly change the order and trial butons. People get accustom to clicking in a certain way, mixing it up can really make a difference.

I haven’t considered changing my ad colors either. I do, however, think that if you continue to try out the different styles of ads on the site, you may see some income increase! for example, if you put picture ads in exchange for text ads. You may see a difference in traffic, income, etc.
Wayne FArley says
I’ve never changed the colour scheme of my AdSense units, but I’ve experimented with different sizes and text/images combination. I believe the colour pallet however should be dictated by the colour scheme of the website. For now, my ads and website colour scheme matches, so I’ll work with this unless compelled to do otherwise.
Kharim says
Well I have messed around with my Adsense ever since I joined and I have noticed that messing around with the colors has really increased my CTR. What mostly work for me is blending my ads with my background and in some areas image ads.
Also using border colors that are relevant to my site colors also works well for me.

Hi Lisa, I saw that tweet from @adsense also, but I hadn’t taken any action on it. I’m currently testing another tip which is to have rectangular image ads placed at the end of blog posts. I plan to give it at least 2 – 3 weeks before decide it’s time to test the next one. Thanks for reminding me.

Hey Lisa,
I’m not much of a changer when it comes to changing Adsense colours. For the majority of my niche blogs I find that just the basic adsense advertisement is working for me, but as you said there’s always room for improvement.
So, this month I’m going to try and switch it up a little, probably change a few colours and see what the CTR is.
Regards
Karl
