Even though the Internet has evolved drastically over the years, there’s one constant motivator that has kept me going.
As discussed in the video below, I discovered a deep passion for doing something I have been unconsciously doing since I was a child.
What’s the motivation behind your website? What keeps you going even when the traffic or money is not what you’d like it to be?
Mia Wynn says
I give the credit to God. I did misunderstand. Knowing that I am helping someone with my site is what I find keeps me motivated. 1) Indeed – Go Germanator (and Kidd, Sean and all)!

And thats sad. While such works do not last, if we’re in a profession we’re passionate about we’re certainly going to stick to that profession. I personally don’t care for that part of the process much, but if you can make it work for you and do well with a bunch of niche sites then go for it! that said, for many it is also about the “promise” that the future holds, at least for those that understand magic doesn’t happen overnight.

We should be passionate about our work. Most of us are in profession which we don’t like, we work out of compulsion just for the sake of earning. While such works do not last, if we’re in a profession we’re passionate about we’re certainly going to stick to that profession.

Doing blogging because you enjoy it is definitely important. If i didn’t enjoy it i wouldn’t still be doing it now.
John says
Indeed you need real motivation in what you do. Not only in online business you’re in, but in everything you want to do.
You can do cool stuff without motivation too, but i don’t think you can do great stuff, because before achieving the “great” level you will meet a lot of obstacles, and only real motivation and passion can help you get over them.
Anyway I love your other articles too and the fact that you share a lot of thing. Keep up the good work and the motivation high!

Wonderful stuff, and absolutely correct and interesting at the same time. I’ve thought of myself as an educator most of the time when I write my blog posts and I think that works well for me. I always hope that visitors respond well to what I do; best I can hope for.

Motivation can affect the beauty of writing… I also believe that passion has a big part in motivation…If you love what you are doing, it will have a good outcome…

Hi Lisa,
Been a fan for a long time, but first time commenting.
Excellent and inspiring video! Now I have to find that passion that will keep me going. I have ventured into a bunch of failed online businesses because I realized I wasn’t passionate and motivated enough to work on them.

Lisa,
Your message is right on! I’ve been a teacher for almost 20 years and I’ve recently decided to take my expertise (foreign language education) to create a site revolving around it. I love to teach, but I want to do it online instead of in the classroom and not just educate learners but to educate other teachers as well. I have wanted to be my own entrepreneur for years and am now learning how to do it. I’m hoping to be teaching from my home-office within the next two years…that’s the time goal I’ve set for myself.
Thank you for everything you do. I enjoy your videos and find them so helpful!
Cheers!

I am actually looking right now for motivation since I am a newbie… We all know that blogging is not that easy and we have to be inspired to do so…

Hey Lisa, YOU have been MY motivation and inspiration for almost a year now. 🙂 I love my website and working on it…and everytime I visit your site or watch your videos, I get even more motivated! My launched on April 1st 2011 and I get a LOT of traffic so far…however I’m not putting a lot of adds on my site yet because my main priority is providing my readers with quality content. And after seeing your video about your motivation I feel even better about thinking of my visitors/readers FIRST and not the $$.
Thanks for all you do! I admire you. 🙂
Greetings from Maine,
Alex

Hi Lisa
Love your vide – full of energy.
Great point about being an online teacher.
Good way of looking at what you do on the web.
I have a Public Speaking site si I guess that I could call myself a teacher.
Now I’ve got to look at making money from it.
Cheers Lisa

Very inspiring video and message Lisa. Thanks for sharing.
I think like you that passion and commitment are absolute necessary to succeed online.
Dave Lucas says
My website (blog) is an extension of my eclectic brain and the way I experience life. I don’t sell anything. I give everything away free. If and when the time comes for me to make some money by selling something, well then, so it shall be.
Jere says
I totally agree with this video. You must always find something that you like or are willing to learn about and try and make it profitable helping others.
Nowadays, most people the only incentive they have is making money, thats it. Even if they are doing something that they disagree with, they get on with it because of the money. And thats sad.
I think its necessary that we work in changing our value systems and in the future I am certain that this would completly change the economy as we now it today: its incentives, the actual system, etc.

Great,
I am a teacher, full time.
An I am running my website/blog with Electrical Engineering Video-Tutorials to support my students, and also other students who want to use my stuff.
And you know what – it is a great feeling, that so many people are intersted in the stuff I put online.
They do not have to consume my videos, becase a teacher tell them to do so, they just do it, because they help them.
sanji says
I agree with Sunil, Passion is what drives us into the web. Everything should start with it, you cannot sell something if you don’t know how to use it. Passion and perseverance is the key. Thanks for the vid!

@Dave – Yanik Silver is an info marketer on blogging. I am sure it can be done.
Thanks Lisa,
I have to say this website has been a long time coming for me. I tried selling all different types of products in the “real world”, but I haven’t been as successful as I have with just trying things online. I am still at the beginning stages and I am still learning a LOT, but I know I won’t give up. It’s all about the passion as you and Sunil stated. I have started some of these videos on youtube, but I haven’t gotten the right mix yet, but I know it will happen. I have nothing to lose. If Kernel Sanders can do it in his 60s, I can do it in my 30s!
Peace!
Dave says
Seeing that I am a teacher, I understand your passion. The one thing that you have is you are your own boss too. This is what I am striving for with my website pursuit.
Do you think their would be a market out there if I were to blog about what I teach in 6th grade English? Basically, I would start a blog about how to improve at writing. I could teach the 6 traits of writing, how to mix in different sentence types to improve the flow of an article, and even get into how to produce higher quality videos.
I’m struggling with a way to monotize it, but I guess I could just recommend SBI or different WordPress themes, or even write my own how to write book.
lisa says
Hi Dave,
I think hosting and website themes would be a tough sell on that kind of site. You may make a few sales here and there but probably having your own book/product would do even better. I would say decide who you want to focus on (other 6th grade teachers, etc. and the problems they face) and really nail down the issues, problems, etc. Then deliver those needs in your product. My niche has a lot of great, high-paying affiliate programs, but certain niches do better when there is a product tailored to the audience.
Dave says
I think you misunderstood the blog idea. I would be helping other bloggers with their writing by teaching the same content I do to the 6th graders. It wouldn’t be about the teachers helping other teachers. Most magazines and newspaper articles are written at the 6th to 7th grade level (easier to understand/more conversational) which is ideal for blogging.
lisa says
Ohhhh! OK, sorry. Then yes, that could work. I did misunderstand. 🙂
Flo | Create Your Own Website says
When I created my first static site, the motivation at the beginning was the new things I learnt everyday. I marvelled at the fact that we can achieve these wonderful website layouts and designs from simple text called CSS and HTML. That alone made me sit in front of the computer for hours on end without realizing it.
Then later, when the site went live and people started visiting and sending me those nice words, that became a source of motivation to keep updating the site because I knew that there is someone out there who needs and appreciates the information that I am putting out there.
lisa says
Flo, I can relate to this soooooooooooo much! I had the same experience when getting started.
Betty says
Knowing that I am helping someone with my site is what I find keeps me motivated. When I am not writing, I may have several ideas that I can hardly wait to start writing about. I do get tired, but after resting, all I can think about is getting back to writing. I give the credit to God. God always gives me something to write.
Ileane says
Lisa, I have a similar passion for teaching that you have which is why I was drawn to your site the first time I watched one of your videos. It’s real important for people to think about this before they decide on a career – or even pick a new career. I think this is one of the primary reasons so many people are miserable and hate their jobs – because they jumped at the first opportunity that came their way without consideration to whether they would be happy or satisfied in a given field or not.
Of course it helps when you have one than one thing you like doing. That gives you more options.
lisa says
I can tell you do Ileane. It comes across in your videos and writing. Good job!
Scott says
Very true as always Lisa. I would say that my blog has really helped one person. I love the fact that I could help even just this one person. I am still a kid and I need help with a lot of things. I need lisa’s tutorials I needed some of the advice from the big blogs in my niche etc.
Tikyd says
I too thought that teachers did not make a lot of money, so I did not really consider it in the past. While I do not have your experience and I am not a teacher, I can understand that helping someone become financially independent has to be very rewarding. It reminds me of a saying of the prophet Muhammad (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) about teaching the quran:
“The best amongst you is the one who learns the Qur’an and teaches it.”
Lately Kim Roach also mentioned that having fun was a reason behind the growth in their business.
Sunil from The Extra Money Blog says
passion i’d say is key. i run several websites, most of which are in fields beyond my interest. however, my blog is my passion. every single website is successful and generates passive and residual income for me.
passion, whether it is the subject, or the process of making something from nothing is key when i searched for the answer to why my portfolio is doing very well.
that said, for many it is also about the “promise” that the future holds, at least for those that understand magic doesn’t happen overnight.
lisa says
That’s a great example, Sunil. I often talk about passion in relation to the subject matter of your website, but some people find joy in keyword research, SEO, etc. I personally don’t care for that part of the process much, but if you can make it work for you and do well with a bunch of niche sites then go for it!
Matt Houldsworth says
Hey, you hit the nail on the head, I always say, do something you are interested in, very hard to sell something that you don’t have an affinity with.
Interest in a subject will allow you to keep at it and not just give up when the going gets tough, but it also helps you write from authority, write with enthusiasm that will come across to your sites visitors, and they will be more likely to buy
After all people buy from people, if you can achieve that then you will have the success.
