Stop The SEO Madness! [Video]

Filed Under: Build Traffic, SEO 23 Comments

What is your ritual for creating a web page to rank high in the search engines?  Do you spend time counting the keywords in your meta tags?

Do you obsess over the number of outbound links you have, thinking they might be hurting you in some way?  Do you copy your competitor’s meta tags hoping you can steal their rankings?

Maybe you’re puzzled by the lack of traffic you’ve been able to receive from popular search engines like Google and Yahoo.

If any of this sounds like your SEO habits, you’ll want to watch this video…

    Lisa,
Thank you for all of your help. It is because of you that I have decided to turn my ecomerse site into an affiliate business. Thanks to google adsense after a few days I have a few dollars. My question is, should I subscribe to SEO pro tools?

What do you think about 3 way exchange links? That’s the option, isn’t it?

Josef’s last blog post..How to choose a right Niche?

In my opinion, they’re not much different than 2-way links. One way links are best because you are not having to link back to anyone and that shows that people love your site so much that you are getting links without having to give them in return.

    Thank you Lisa,

As usually you are very helpful. Without you almost nobody would know anything about blogging or websites. I know you have helped so many people, and you keep helping many others as well, we are all very greatful for that.

Thank you a lot and continue being the great person you are:)

Geri, you are correct. Since your blog is self hosted you can add google ads.

I cannot answer your 2nd question. You could write 500 posts per day but if you don’t market your blog properly and write good, useful content you may not get much traffic. It’s not necessarily about how many posts you make. It’s about your ability to draw in readers who want to devour your content.

The best way to learn is to just get out there and start blogging and provide value. Promote yourself on social networking sites and network with other bloggers. Read up on SEO to learn how to drive search engine traffic. Your success largely depends on you and well you market. Good luck! 🙂

    Hi Lisa,

A few comments above Nick wrote that wordpress did not support adsense, and that blogger does. Is this for real? I made a wordpress blog on my domain at websitepalace a few weeks ago. I host my own domain and it is wordpress then I should be able to put adsense ads eventually one day when I have more info, right? Or I am mistaken?

Regarding the traffic that blogs gets, do you know how long it takes on average until a new blog starts getting a good amount of traffic. I mean if I write quality content on my blog every day or ever 2-3 days will it take months or even an year or more until I start getting good amount of visitors so that I can put adsense ads then? I am not in rush at all, I am just asking so that I have hopes that one day I will have some good traffic. What do you think?

Thank you a lot in advance,

    Geri

Being english not my first language, by any means, I’m glad to tell you that understood perfectly every detail,(I often fail on my listening) technical or not, and still wasn’t slow or boring at all ! Even when I have close to no patience to watch youtube videos.(btw, I dream of it having the resolution of viddler or vimeo, as seems youtube is better for difussion…or is that part of the madness, lol)

I have been suspecting for some time that a lot of it was al a madness… specially when am in a bit of charge of seo at my place while am no seo expert…

I take note: content, good content, what I have heard lately more… Rather than do plastic constructions… For work and personal projects….

    Thanks!

Joe Webmaster… that’s soooo pre-election……street cred……you’re so uhhh ghetto…..j/k…love how you really come across like the everyday person and not that guru ish…great post, I’m still a newbie, and I’m glad you took the pressure off of worrying about all of those stats…

I wasn’t worrying anyway, just doing what I do, but I was wondering if I was setting myself up for a fall by not trying to track everything.

You should make a dvd or a dvd series, that’ll make you a grip…(I can produce and edit it, lol)….anyhoo, keep up the good work

    Great job, Lisa!

I’d also like to add that the file names play a nice part in SEO as well. Rather than naming your recipe site pages: page1.html, page2.html, page3.html, it’s better to name them apple-pie-recipes.html, orange-crisp-cake.html, etc.

This also helps the SE’s to understand what your pages are about, as well as those doing a search at the SE’s to see the tile of the page more clearly.

Of course this is on-page criteria, and not to much off-page criteria, but still helps very much. 🙂

Great post, Chris! And I’m still shaking my head at the person who asked you for a link exchange but then worried about the outbound link. That makes no sense.

And don’t get me started on the PageRank obsession, LOL. I could write another blog post on that one alone. 🙂

Hang in there. Making a full time living is not only about SEO, it’s a combination of that, finding the right programs and converting your traffic. Sounds like you’re doing fine, just keep up the great work.

    Hi Lisa,

Thanks once again for the informative video. And yes, you are correct in calling it SEO Madness! It really IS SEO Madness!

Here is an example of the SEO Madness:

Just today I had someone e-mail me with a request for a link exchange with one of my sites.

I didn’t see a link back to mine, but I went ahead and placed a link on my site to the other site. Then I e-mailed the webmaster and said that I had placed his link and would appreciate a link back.

He e-mailed back and said that he couldn’t link back to me because outbound links were bad for his SEO. I asked him why he was asking people for link exchanges in the first place then!

Anyway, I agree that webmasters often have some strange ideas about what makes good SEO. Take PageRank for example – webmasters obsess over getting links from sites with high PageRank – even if the site has nothing to do with their topic at all. For example, I have a site about fish with a PageRank of 5. I get all kinds of webmasters e-mailing me to ask if I will add their link. I do have a links page, but I only link to sites that are relevant to my own topic and only sites that I believe will be useful to my visitors. However, many webmaster believe that getting a link from a high PageRank site will boost their search engine rankings even if the site linking to them is on a completely irrelevant topic to their own site.

Like you, I do use meta tags, but don’t obsess over them either, and I don’t count keywords. I have no idea what my keyword density is for any of my sites. I write only for human visitors – however many there are.

Basically, I just do what makes sense to me – regardless of what it means to the search engines (except for the title and meta tags, that is).

However, unlike you I don’t make a full time living online and so I don’t know everything either. Perhaps I’m not doing something I should, or I’m doing something I shouldn’t.

However, the things you said in your video made sense to me and so perhaps I do know a bit about SEO. Time will tell I guess.
