On August 25th, Google announced there will be more revenue earning opportunities for AdSense publishers.
In the coming months, you’ll be able to display ads from additional networks.
Google ensures this will give you, the publisher, the chance to maximize profits from AdWords and ads sponsored by 3rd parties.
Some AdSense publishers often complain of poorly targeted ads on certain pages. Many times it’s because there aren’t many relevant ads to show for certain content.
This new development may alleviate some of those issues and offer more relevant ad possibilities.
Not interested in this option? No problem. If you don’t want to show ads from 3rd party networks, you can continue to show AdWords ads only. You’ll be able to configure your settings in the My Account tab.
This is one of several changes/updates in Google’s ad program this year. In March, Google introduced interest-based advertising. This is where your visitors may see ads based on websites they frequent instead of ads related to your page content.
So if your site is about tennis, a visitor may see a Google ad about video games based on their browsing history. And just like the 3rd party networks, you may opt out of this by going to the Account Settings section under the My Account tab.
One of my favorite new features of 2009 is the ability to block certain ad categories. In case you didn’t know, you can go to the Ad Review Center (under Adsense Settings) and choose up to 5 categories to filter.
Google will even tell you which categories earn you the most (by percentage) to help you determine which categories to block.
Lots of changes for Google’s ad program this year. Overall, I think it’s a good thing for the publishers and advertisers.
What are your thoughts on the new changes? Do you ever make changes to the default ad settings in your AdSense account? If so, how has it helped you?
Friv says
I think it is always good to have more adds to display. The more add bigger the chance to get click and earn cash. So adsense is the way to go for all the arcade sites owners.

I wish adsense allowed pictures next to text ads. Why would they not allow it? I remember when Ken Evoy even wondered why they didn’t allow it, in some of his articles.
Other ad revenue providers allow pics – and people love pics – this would generate more revenue – so why does Google Adsense have so much beef with livening up an ad?
It’s ok to have image ads and video ads – but it’s not ok to have text ads with images next to them? What’s up with that? I think that would be a change worth way more than all the last several years worth of Adsense changes.
I do agree with their 3 ad limit policy – that is a definite anti-spam approach I support – but excluding images next to ads – what are they afraid of?

I like the idea of the change. I think that anything that allows us publishers more flexibility is a good thing.

adsense has overtaken pretty much all other avenues of income for my website and is currently the top earner (growing content has exponentially fueled adsense earnings growth). though i do not often make changes to default settings, this seems like it would be worth the time. what has helped in the past is the blacklist program that gives you a list of domains that you can block. these domains are arbitrage concepts that steal clicks from you at low costs and sell them at higher costs on their site. Lisa, thanks for bringing relevant changes to our attention!

Hey Lisa,
Even thought I have yet to make money online, I would like to thank you for all your advice! You were the first one who introduced me to AdSense and inspired me to create a website. Ever since I first saw you on YouTube a few months ago, I’ve been reading your websites, your ebooks and your blog. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!!

I wasn’t aware of those changes. I begin to write articles on HubPages about 3 months ago, and I had been able to earn from Google AdSense on HubPages. Since that time, my Google AdSense start increasing, slowly but still, increasing 🙂

I used to make a lot of money with Adsense about 3 years ago. I had dozens of sites with Adsense all over them. When Google lowered the click-through payout, my earnings dropped. However, if I had created the right type of sites that targeted high paying keywords, those sites would still be profitable today. Lesson? Target the right keywords for your Adsense websites!

Great article. I only recently found out about blocking certain ad categories.. I then blocked a few of the obnoxious ad categories that I don’t find many of my readers would even be half interested in. I also think it’s great that right there it shows how often each category is shown and what percentage of earnings have come from each one. Awesome. After blocking a few categories I did not want, I am waiting to see if I get even greater results.

Thanks for spreading the word about the new Google changes. I didn’t know about them and I discovered a few ad categories that I don’t want appearing on my sites.
I agree with a previous poster that Google will benefit more than publishers in the end, but it’s nice to be able to filter out certain types of ads, and to see earnings percentages of all the categories.

As usual your blog posts are timely. I’ve been in dire need to revamp AdSense and understand the dynamics, so all these new options need to be analyzed and scoped out. Now I gotta go read all the other AdSense articles on your site …. thanks for the push to profits (?)

I wasn’t aware of these new options Lisa, you rock 🙂 I’ve thought of firing Adsense back up, but I’m probably still gonna wait a bit. I agree with your mentality of waiting until you have some decent traffic.
On a side note, have you updated TweetThis plugin lately? When I did, it broke. LOL.

I have very limited experience with Google AdSense, but I suppose this is a good thing – more competition, better payment for us publishers, I hope.

I’m always open to new options, although I’m pretty this will benefit Google more in the long run than it will us poor publishers 🙂 I do like the idea of tailoring ads to the visitor, they’re more likely to click something they’ve already been browsing.

Have to admit I was excited to see this pop in my box last week.
It should make things a bit easier on us. I hate having to open up all these different accounts just so you have ads to rotate and options to tinker with to get some idea of what your clan will and won’t click on.
Back in my days of running review blogs it seemed easy to put ads around your article and make sales.
Maybe it’s just the market, seems as if the internet marketing types are so desensitized to the entire ad scene that they can get through your entire site and never click on anything.
Maybe that’s why I like them so much it presents a challenge and actually forces you to think a lot more than other markets I’ve been in where you can lead people around and get them to do exactly what you want them to do.
Only time will tell…

hmm nice to see some good changes in Google Adsense which will benefit publishers in my opinion, but we will have to see if Google pays good (same) money on adds from 3rd party (other networks) also i expect they will be in same formats as adsense.
