Thanks Lisa. That was a good start to get a basic idea. These tips can greatly help a person, so he doesn’t overcharge. Anyway undercharging is alwass an option considering the market demand.

Seriously, $2 for every 1,000 views? Is there anyway to adjust like, for more like $10 for every 1,000 views? Goodness that is a low price!

You can do whatever you want to do. It’s your site. Just make sure the price matches the value received. For example if your ads tend to yield a very low click-through rate then charging that much may not be fair. So it’s important to know how ads convert to be fair to your customers.

Recently I got an e-mail from an advertiser and didn’t know what fair price I should be charging. After watching the video I now have a little more insight towards this situation. I want to secure the business and hopefully turn it into a long term one.

    Lisa:
Thank you for putting up this video! It was EXACTLY what I was looking for. I recognized your website in the #2 position of Google and knew that you put up great stuff so I came to your site right away (anyone reading this: Lisa was a great help to me and would have no problems buying what she recommends).

Anyway, I like your objective suggestions as well as your “relationship building” advice when determining how much to charge for ad space. It is advice I will use:)

Hope your business is increasing in a sluggish economy. You do know this is the best time to increase your business, don’t you? wink wink:)

    Take care and thanks again,
    Charlie

    Hi Lisa,
I am close to finish a website that in my opinion will be successful as it will provide solutions to a fantastic existing global growing community. As the website has not been launched the traffic is nil. When launching I want to have included in the website ads from products/service providers related to this growing community/market. What would be the best way to attract them to advertise when the traffic has not been created yet? Your guidance would be greatly appreciated. Alberto

$2 for every 1000 page views? Not much but everyone starts some where. When you have a $100 or more server bill, it really sucks though! :'(

A lot of people sell themselves too cheaply with advertising costs while others basically demand that you give them your whole arm plus a leg to get featured on their website or blog.
    Thanks for the video

    Thanks Lisa,

I’ve been wondering what would be a fair price to charge for ads and so this video was right on target for me. I get emails from people asking me what I would charge for an ad on my site, but I have never known how much to charge and so I just haven’t placed any ads.

Also, I hope this isn’t too far off topic, but what is the best method for collecting payments for any Web ads we sell? Paypal? Check by mail? Credit card options?

    Thanks.

Credit card and PayPal are probably the most popular and convenient. But there are also options like 2Checkout and Google Checkout. If you use AdPeeps (the script I’m using on my static website) they support all of these.

I don’t use ad networks so I can’t offer much help there. Maybe someone else can chime in. But OIO Publisher is a great ad plugin for blogs. I have a post here https://blog.2createawebsite.com/2009/08/24/selling-ad-space-on-your-blog-video/ I use AdPeeps on my my static site.

    Hi Lisa:
You always provide great information and produce wonderful videos. I am just beginning to place affiliate ads on my site and find that I am using businesses with which I have built a relationship. I feel that with my site, I am building a community of interested people and products that have something in common. Products listed have something to do with my topic. I want my advertisers to do well so that they are pleased to be working with me at my site. I keep building my site one step at a time. Thanks again for all of your information, it is extremely helpful to me.

I just set ad rates, and according to your formula, it appears I might be undercharging, but it’s all good since the ads are a new thing.

I’ll be a regular visitor here from now on.

    Hey Lisa,

Thanks for the quality video, it can be challenging working out the cost balance. Most people are not sure if they should go in low and get the ads or high, but risk losing the business.

Anyone can follow your tips and get a clear quantifiable figure to charge for their ads.

    Thanks for the post.

    Very informative video Lisa.

Of course, the ads should be done in moderation. My opinion is that too many ads decrease the value of the site because it can compromise user experience.

Ads can be placed anywhere on a site, so what part of the site would you recommend for ads that won’t be too intrusive but still visible and can attract visitors?

I think it really depends on the design. You said it best. As long as they don’t overpower the site BUT provide decent placement that appeals to your advertisers. It’s about finding the middle ground.

Hi Lisa, 1 – 2% is a great benchmark for people to follow. It’s the same one we use for a our direct mail campaigns. If the results fall below that, we know that we need to do some tweaking.
StumbleUpon users have an extremely high bounce rate on my blogs too.
You should always test different types of ads to help find that sweet spot and stick to it. We also use Vertical Response and test to see which emails campaigns generate the most ROI – everything from the use of graphics to the length of the message to see what works best.
