How to Minimize Your Chances of AdSense Click Fraud and Getting Banned

Filed Under: AdSense/CPC, Make Money 148 Comments

Google AdSensePeople often ask me for help when it comes to dealing with disabled AdSense accounts and preventing click fraud.  So I did some digging over the weekend.

You may not realize it, but Google has quite a bit of documentation on these topics to help AdSense publishers keep their accounts in good standing.

Preventing Invalid Activity

While there’s nothing you can do to completely protect your account from sabotage, the following article has some tips and guidelines that may help you guard against invalid click activity.

Pay special attention to the tip about “partnering with untrusted websites.”  They used the example of paying for traffic from questionable sources.

Often times these services send artificial traffic via bots which can generate false impressions and clicks on your ads.  That’s a surefire way to get banned from AdSense.

Always do your homework before signing up with any “traffic generation service.”  If it isn’t clear how they are generating the traffic to your website, that should always raise red flags.

Notice Anything Suspicious?

Google encourages you to monitor your traffic logs, and if you notice any reports that indicate suspicious IP addresses, referrers or requests, complete this form.

Analytics does not provide visitor IP information, but you can use a service like PIWIK or the WordPress StatCounter plugin to obtain such information.  Your web hosting control panel should also provide more detailed log info should you need to research visitor information.

A lady once told me she was able to get her AdSense account reinstated after producing a report with her appeal that showed a pattern of suspicious activity from an IP address on the day she was banned.

How to Appeal Your Disabled Account

Let’s face it.  Sometimes Google gets it wrong and disables accounts owned by people who were playing by the rules.  If you feel your account has been wrongfully disabled, you can appeal using this form.

“AdSense is a Scam!”

People often claim AdSense is a scam when their accounts become disabled.

AdSense is far from being a scam. Google actually wants AdSense Publishers to succeed because the more quality, relevant websites their advertisers have access to, the more revenue Google can potentially earn.

That’s why they have an AdSense Optimization Team — a task force dedicated to helping publishers maximize their earnings so Google can ultimately earn more.

My point is, Google really has nothing to gain by disabling AdSense accounts for “no good reason.”  So I’ve never understood the scam complaints I often receive in the comments of my YouTube videos.

If Google disabled your account, it’s because they believe there’s a risk or evidence it has produced invalid clicks — which is not fair to their advertisers.

You have to realize that the AdWords advertisers are Google’s customers and top priority — not us, the AdSense publishers.

If they suspect click fraud or notice any strange patterns with our AdSense accounts, they will do what is necessary to ensure their advertiser’s money is not being wasted on invalid clicks.

Unfortunately this sometimes results in people’s accounts getting wrongfully disabled.  That is why they allow you to appeal.

At the end of the day, Google is doing what’s best for their business and that is protecting their top revenue source — which is the AdWords advertisers.

It’s impossible to protect your account 100% of the time, but if you follow the guidelines on the articles above, you can minimize the chances of your account becoming disabled.

There are webmasters that do play by the book but the devil can still bite you in the back.

So why dont google themself provide some sort of ip logging through google analytics?

Which can be turned on or off.

Google provides us all with great tools but if someone wants they can kill your adsense account any day by sending a team of bots.

Hackers attack government websites for fun.

So why not kill adsense accounts for fun.

i am totally agree with your article, but i think you should mention one
point and that is type of ads, i don’t mean banner-text-and rich media,
i am telling about types like, “adsense for content and adsense for
parking domain, when ever i know this both ad types are working
diffrently, and if we do mistake to get right code, we can’t earn any
money if we got lots of click. i would like to know more about this
matter. please post about this matter. it will be interesting.

You will still be able to see your adsense dashboard from the office. Your website won’t show the ads if you go to it from there though.

Links are filtered on Lisa’s site but if you google this you will find your answer:

“stop or disallow certain IP from displaying adsense ads”

Adsense is an awesome program to earn money from your online content. It is not a scam. I made money from Google Adsense by myself. So I know it is a real program. Some clicks generate even $1.25 per click. The most common reason to ban an adsense account is self clicking of ads. Never ever do it. Google has a very strong Ip tracking system. So never do it.

The article you made explains everything very clearly. It is a nice share.

    Thanks for such valuable sharing.
    Good luck.

My personal opinion is not to jump into adsense too early. If you are not getting a reasonable amount of traffic, no amount of appeals will be worth Google’s time to even look into. If you don’t have at least 5000 visitors per month, wait.

Couldn’t agree more! What people don’t realize is if you have low traffic you are much more likely to get disabled. If they suspect any kind of fraudulent activity and your site doesn’t have the traffic potential to bring in money for Google, they consider you a liability and risk to their advertisers.

Hi, I just stumbled onto your blog from a Youtube video of you, posted on another site! I must say, this is an amazing resource you have here.

I have been blogging occasionally for about 4 years, but have only been serious about it for the past couple months. I am blogging about something I am passionate about, which is art… and helping other artists who need to get their artworks seen, but have little technical know-how. I realize there are other blogs about this, but I have been using my own unique spin on things, along with helping my readers in areas that are important to them.

Thanks for providing such a useful service here! I will be back to visit regularly… that reminds me… I’m subscribing now!

another subtle pit fall to watch out for is, if you are showing adsense ads on your site and you are also showing ads from other ad networks these ads contribute to your site content. So for instance, in the adsens t&cs you are not allowed to show adsense ads on pages with gambling content, if ads for gambling show up on your page from the other third party ads network you are contravening the adsense t&cs and can get banned. Make sure if you are showing ads from adsense and from another ad network that you can control the type of ads that show from the other network, you need to be able to say you don’t want to show ads that will put you in trouble.

Google Earn almost 97% revenue from Google ad sense so there is no chance that Google is a scam instead of that they want to be transparent with publishers. so they ban people with invalid activities

that’s the point though, they don’t always ban publishers with invalid activities. I see sites all the time with no actual content, they are simply pages and pages of adsense ads, each page just shows links related to search term you came in on

adsense is a con when it leaves sites with no content, only adsense ads standing because they are making too much money to pull down. I understand they want quality but there seem to be an aweful lot of ad farms that slip through the net. I guess it’s shear numbers, easy to throw up and hard to find and disable.
Thanks for the cool resources here though, I must admit I hadn’t thought to protect our adsense sites.

The article is nice and informative. Now a day, many of the adsense publishers have lost their account by disabling. And many of them felt that this is a scam as once they reach the minimum payout, google Bans the account. It is not right.

Google is looking for the quality of the unique content of publishers. So try to generate unique content with interesting information.

your tag line is ‘they make it I break it’.
      From Adsense Program Policy
      Point No. 2
      Content guidelines

Publishers may not place AdSense code on pages [which]include or link to:
      •Pornography, adult or mature content
      •Violent content
•Content related to racial intolerance or advocacy against any individual, group or organisation
      •Excessive profanity
      •Hacking/cracking content

I had to read about 10 lines of text to find this. You’ve been banned 6 times and you didn’t think to read the program policy???
You hack stuff and you’ve already got 6 or 7 accounts out of them when G say they will not let users reapply if they’ve been banned. Seems like you are not putting your energy in the right place, I think you could very easily get an account on a different domain and put the same ads on this site, then cloak to redirect G manual checkers to different content if they see from the logs this site is also showing ads from your account and come to check it out.
