I rarely write about reselling domains and hosting — which is my strongest income source, and has been since 2002.
The reason it’s so strong is because it’s residual.
This is important — especially if too much of your traffic is dependent upon Google’s ever-changing algorithm!
It’s always ideal to develop residual income streams for stability.
I don’t mention this opportunity often on my blog because most of you do not have the right audience, so signing up to resell will not be a profitable venture for you.
Why? Because reselling costs money (a yearly fee) unlike affiliate programs.
However, I just came back from a reseller conference in sunny Scottsdale where I got to chat with other top resellers. Most of the people earn 4 and 5 figures per month, and many of them don’t have sites that focuses on website creation.
I’ll explain more about what they do in a bit.
How Domain & Hosting Reselling Works
Before I provide more on how you can create this residual income source, let me explain how it all works.
As a domain and hosting reseller, you will receive a ready-made store that you can brand yourself. You set your own prices for domains and hosting while earning a commission for every single product sold through your store.
So when you send someone to your store to register a domain, your commission is earned instantly and recurs with every renewal.
The reason it is so lucrative is because domains and hosting are recurring billing products. So for every customer you recruit, you earn a percentage (roughly 25%) of every payment. The more people who host at your store, the more you’ll make over time.
The customer, billing and technical support is handled for you. In fact, I got to visit the call center this past week and was impressed at how focused they are on customer support. It’s good to know, my customers are in good hands.
How it Can Work For You
At the conference, I got to speak with a lot of resellers who don’t have websites like mine, but are doing extremely well. Most people, including myself, earn enough to make a living.
Some of them hold local classes and walk people through setting up their WordPress websites and then everyone in the class buys their domains and hosting plans from their branded store.
One reseller belongs to a local association of plumbers in his hometown, and many of them need websites, but have no idea how to start. So he sets up the websites for free and hosts them all on his reseller store.
Now he is earning a commission on the monthly hosting fees for every site.
If you think about it, everyone wants a website today, so if you know a lot of people in your personal life that need them, you could host their sites through your reseller site so you’ll earn residuals on their billing for the lifetime of their sites.
The other advantage of having your own store is you can buy your domains at very low buy rates. I usually never pay more than $8 for a new .COM domain name or renewals.
Many popular registrars will price domains low for your first year of registration, but the renewals may be much higher. When you have your own store, you can control your renewal pricing.
I also buy a lot of domains to use for redirection to important landing pages. For example, WPStarterTips.com is a new domain I use to redirect to a page on my blog for my WordPress email tips.
I think this looks much cleaner than a URL shortener or redirect.
So if you register a lot of domains like I do, it may be worth signing up just to save on domain registration fees and renewals.
“Wouldn’t I Earn More as a Hosting Affiliate?”
I get this question a lot. Since many of the popular hosting companies offer generous commissions (as much as $150 per referral), wouldn’t you make more just referring hosting plans?
You may initially, but you are not building up residuals with hosting affiliate programs. It’s a one-time commission.
Also, if you lose the bulk of your traffic in a Google algorithm update, you’ll also lose more of your monthly affiliate income.
If this happens to you as a reseller, yes you will lose new business, but you will still earn from the people who already signed up.
So I have no regrets about reselling. I’ve watched other Internet marketers disclose their earnings from hosting affiliate programs. Many of them have much larger audiences than me, but my earnings are higher because of the residuals.
When You Should Resell
Reselling doesn’t make sense for everyone, and it might not make sense for you. If you only refer a handful of people to hosting, then you will probably make more as an affiliate for one of the popular hosting companies since the commissions are so high. So save your money.
However, if you are constantly setting up websites for people or you have access to a local group that needs an online presence – then you might want to think about reselling.
I bet many of you know tons of people who need websites right now. You could setup WordPress sites for your customers and use your store to host them.
And finally, if you are a domainer (someone who acquires a lot of domains to resell), or you buy a lot of domains for your own personal/business use like me, it’s worth signing up just to save on domain name purchases and renewal costs.
So I hope this clarifies how you can earn as a domain/hosting reseller. I receive a lot of questions about it so I wanted to do this post to offer some clarity.
Just remember, this is not a get rich quick program, and not ideal if you don’t have the right audience. However, some of you may be able to take advantage of this residual opportunity if you know a lot of people who need websites.
Learn more about reselling here. The main difference in the two packages on the site is the buy rate. In other words, you will earn more per sale from your store with the PRO package than you would with the BASIC one.

Are You Missing Out on This Lucrative, Residual Income Opportunity?
Hi there Lisa,
I just wanted to let you know that I found your site through, Glenys Grob @ websitetips4u.com. So I read your posting here about reselling domains and hosting – sounds fascinating! I would really like to know more about this, and how I could learn how I would get started. Do you teach this or could you head me in the right direction – I really don’t know anything about this. I would really love to make a residual income along with my niche websites!
Thank you, and have a wonderful day!

Lisa Irby says
Hi Michelle
Quite honestly I wouldn’t recommend paying for this unless you know you have an audience that is looking to buy domains and hosting. If you don’t, it’s much harder to make sales. I generate all my sales through either Google, my email list, YouTube and sometimes social media since my site is about creating a website.
Is this your niche too?
There really is very little teach if you already have the audience because you simply promote your own reseller store that you are given when you buy. The key is having the RIGHT audience. I always emphasize that because it’s not as easy if your audience is not targeted.

hi Lisa, i am a big fan of yours. i just starting on researching on online earning.
hope you can see this. i am wonder about the part u mention on forwarding your store address to website palace, is there any post you done before regarding forwarding?
Lisa Irby says
No but it’s super simple. You just login to your account, select forward and copy the address.
zy says
Oh my, Lisa, thanks for the fast response.
I decided to give it a go with it, but now i am stucked.
i have paid for the pro version, but i received an email from ccinquiries@secureserver.net saying that i have been selected by verification office.
Now when i log in my account, it requested me submit some id image, and financial related information, and even image of my credit cards.
Is it normal? I don’t wish those sensitive information fall into wrong hands.
have you or any of your fans encounter when they using this service from ultimatedomainreseller?
Look forward for your reply, as now i left 30 plus hours to feedback to them.
Lisa Irby says
You can always email them at support@secureserver.net to inquire. Sometimes they do require you to provide additional information to get paid. I don’t remember having to do this though.

Hi Lisa,
I’m glad I found this post. I do web design so I offer hosting to my customers. However, I have hostgator reseller account and as u know, they don’t do customer service for my customers. I want to give ultimate domain resellers(godaddy) a try but I have a question. How good is their hosting as far as page load speeds? Is this what u use or do u use a different hosting company? I want to offer my customers quality which is why I use hostgator but I like the idea of Godaddy taking care of all the customer service. Thank you Lisa.
Lisa Irby says
Hi Luis, I use my own reseller account for some of my sites and haven’t had any issue with page speed. The customer service is also good. I got to visit the call center last year and was impressed!
angelique berger (@huemoreme) says
Hi Lisa, thank you for your candid answers to the questions I had. I was hoping to ask just one more – Do you have any youtube tutorials on the process of creating your own front page and linking it to your reseller website? Having tracking down a few others, I’ve noticed your permalinks are a bit different and it seems you take good advantage of a Website Palace Landing page. Is this a wordpress build? Thanx again!
-Angelique
Lisa Irby says
Hi Angelique, no I don’t but my landing page is simply a static HTML page that I created on my computer. Some resellers now use WordPress so it really doesn’t matter how you create it. So the homepage just links to your reseller store URL that they supply. They recently gave some resellers a sub domain off our landing page so our URLs on the internal pages now matches our landing page domain (store.websitepalace.com). Before all the internal pages were http://secureserver.net…
I don’t know if they’ve rolled this out to all resellers yet or just the top ones as of now. But my landing page is just a one-page site. The rest of the pages are part of the reseller store. I just manually linked to those pages from that landing page if that makes sense.
Angelique says
Hi Lisa, So happy I found this post. This type of thing sounds perfect for me but my questions are these: A. How or what is the process of using your own branded address, (i.e. website palace)? How exactly is this synched with your personal affiliate id or whatever? I ask because I already purchased a potential name for this purpose via godaddy. Second, did you say that the parent company is GoDaddy?? Finally, have you ever had any negative backlash from unhappy clients you referred to website palace for any screw ups the parent company has made? This is the biggest concern for me. Thanx so much! Ohh yeah, btw, if I sign up to become a reseller as well, can I earn you a commission if I do it off of your link? I would def. like to see you earn a commission for the skin you’ve put in the game at this point. Much appreciated, Angelique
lisa says
Great questions. I registered my own domain and then just synced it with my reseller ID. So the homepage is a page I host and then it links into the reseller store. Yes, it’s a GoDaddy company.
In 11 years of reselling I have RARELY received backlash. I can literally count on my left hand the number of complaints and I have over 40,000 customers. I will say this, GoDaddy has great support. As a top 10 reseller I got a chance to visit the HQ last spring and got to meet the people who answer our customer’s calls. They have a support team dedicated to resellers. I’ve actually heard more praises than complaints.
If you sign up through http://www.ultimatedomainresellers.com then that’s my affiliate link. I appreciate you asking. But I want to be honest. If you do use that link you cannot sign up affiliates under you. Having said that, I don’t hardly make anything from my sub resellers so you will find 99% of your income will come from your sales. So if you ever think you might want to promote the reseller program you’d have to sign up with Wild West Domains directly (GoDaddy’s reseller division). Just wanted to be honest.
Mrinal says
Have anyone heard about Reseller Club? There are many countrywise sites and programs they have. Any experience sharing will be appreciated
Carlos G. says
Hi again Lisa. I’m trying to decide which company I should use for my reseller business but it hasn’t been easy at all. It seems that Godaddy is the only one that will handle support for you, but it gives you a comission of 25% . I was reading that Hostgator and BlueHost will give you 100% of the money you collect from your clients, but they WON’T handle support for you…. Please help me to understand… Will you get 25% of the money from your clients with Godaddy? Thanks Lisa!
lisa says
Hi Carlos, yes not having customer support handled was a deal breaker for me. You will earn more with Hostgator, etc. but you have to handle support. With GoDaddy you get 25% for every sale (first time and monthly/yearly residuals too)
Carlos G. says
Thanks Lisa, it’s crystal-clear now…
I’ve seen that some resellers/affiliates promote their offers with coupons, giving away plugings, books or free services, etc. that add value to the offer. Have you written a post about these ways to entice conversions (and how-to do it) from your affiliate or reseller links?.
Sorry for so many questions. I’m really very interested in this subject but still have many gaps and I don’t know where to study more in depth. Thanks!
Bryan says
Hi Lisa’
One thing I’m hoping you can clarify…
If I join this Domain Reseller program, can I re-sell to both resellers and to end users? is that what you are doing? if so, do I get one site for each program?
Thx a bunch!
Bryan
lisa says
Yes but you can’t sign up under me if you do that. You’ll have to go directly through GoDaddy’s site and sign up to resell.

Hi Lisa. I am currently employed as a multimedia marketing sales consultant for a large regional newspaper in Australia. I am required to also sell advertising space on our website and I am constantly coming across clients that don’t have one, but know that it would help their business if they did. My plan is to begin a second income from designing websites for them and keeping them updated regularly. I have not made up a website of my own, however my daughter assures me that it is easy and that she can show me how. I see this as a great business opportunity, as I already have a large established client base and have begun a list of interested potential clients. But now while doing some research, have come across your website with all this extra information. If you were in my shoes, what path would you take? Thank you.
Drewry says
being a web hosting affiliate is definitely a good thing, because a majority of people wore starting out on the Internet have no idea where to start, in terms of what web hosting company go along with and how to purchase their own domain name.By the Way, Lisa, do you write articles and press releases to promote your websites, and also write articles and press releases to increase your affiliate commissions?
Carlos says
HI again Lisa. Is there any blog / article you would recommend to me where I can learn in detail and step by step how this how domain and hosting reselling works and how to set it up? I have a big online community (in Spanish) and believe that this model is rigth for me and my readers. Thanks so much!

Hi Lisa,
This is great blog .I also have a hosting web site, but still I have not done reselling etc .I want you should guide me if it is good practice. thanks.
Carlos says
Hi Lisa!. I know you have answered this question a couple of times here but it is not clear for me yet. If I enroll in a reseller program, will I (I myself) have to provide the customer support to my clients or the reseller / hosting company will provide the support to my customers?, that’s not clear for me. Thanks so much for everything you do!
lisa says
No absolutely not. There’s no way I would do this if that were the case. The company provides all phone and email support. They have a team dedicated to support for resellers.

hi lisa wonderful way to earn money your post is very interesting and your site is very use full thanks for sharing your blogs with all of us
Adam says
I spoke with one of hosting company about reseller account, but all they provide is “Reseller Account”, not the same as you have, affiliate one. I think yours is better because you don`t need to worry about all the stuff related to hosting, support etc. I`ve read somewhere in comments above that it is possible to switch from cheaper plan to Pro in later stage. I think to start with your basic and see how it goes.
Craig says
Great post Lisa. Forgive the question if it sounds stupid domains and hosting are not something I am great with.
If you have a dedicated server cant you sell the hosting and domain and host it on your dedicated server as I noticed most come with unlimited domains. So still get the domains via another platform and then take 100% of the hosting fees?
I hope that made sense and again forgive me if the question is unclear or daft
lisa says
Hi Craig
I believe some dedicated hosting companies do provide this but I had built up so many customers by the time I went dedicated it didn’t make sense to switch. I have been reselling for 10 years so never really looked into anything else once my base began building up.

Excellent Post, Lisa!
I am looking more into being a reseller, I do have a couple questions though. GoDaddy has plans that you pay per month (8.99, 14.99, etc.) After I read your page on reselling, if I signed up through your Ultimate Domain Reseller site, it’s just a once a year fee. Aside from being less expensive, what’s the difference between the two options and which would you recommend? I want to be able to resell domains and hosting and it seems more practical going through your reseller store but I thought I might be missing something. Thanks!
lisa says
Hey Jake, it’s just a one year fee, correct. Hopefully you’ll be able to make that back in just a few months. The cheaper options means you earn less per commission and it will cost you more to buy your own products (the Buy Rate is cheaper). The PRO option means you earn more per sale. I would go with Pro. But don’t let the “buy rate” terms confuse you. You don’t have to buy anything upfront. You just promote your store and you will earn commissions on anything you sell (domains, hosting, etc.)
jake says
Awesome, thank you! 🙂 I do have one last question. If I want to start out with the Basic plan, can I upgrade my account in a couple months from the Basic to the Pro? Or once you select a plan you have to stick with it?
lisa says
Let me check on that Jake and get back to ya. 😉
lisa says
OK, just heard back from my rep. Yes, you can. You’d just pay the prorated difference.
jake says
Thank you, Lisa. I appreciate you taking the time to find out for me! Have a great day! 🙂

Right said Lisa resellers earn more then affiliates but i think building a online store is though enough. As per my knowledge webhosts like Hostagtor do not provide ready made online stores. If you know about a host you have ever came across then please mention.

Thanks Lisa for sharing just another way to make extra income on the internet. Since you published this post, I have been browsing or surfing the web to get more information about domain reselling. But,my problem is choosing the right platform. If I may ask, which is the best reseller platform to start reselling domain?
lisa says
There are many but I’ve only had experience with the one I listed here. I know many people use Hostgator and love it too. So you may want to check them out. Problem is, I think you have to handle your own support. With thousands of customers, I wouldn’t be able to handle that.
Elke Hinze says
Hi Lisa,
This is sound advice! I have been reselling domains and hosting for a couple of years now, mainly to my web design/development clients.
I don’t really make a lot of money doing it, but I make enough to cover the cost of hosting (which I need anyway) and it also keeps the client tied to me. If they need something web related, they’re more likely to come to me since I’m already their provider.
hazel says
I would love to have that figure. I could use some residual income like that. Please tell me more about it

I have often thought about starting up as a hosting reseller but isn’t it a pretty saturated market these days?
lisa says
Saturated online? Yes. Offline, no. Most people in my personal life don’t have a clue how to setup a website and want one so there are plenty of opportunities if you know people that want to create a websites. Show them how to get started and setup their hosting through your store.
Crystal says
Thanks Lisa for posting such a clear and informative explanation on the differences between reselling and affiliate commissions. I have also been in the process of trying to figure out which would be the best option. I really appreciate the idea you presented about setting up websites for people within our audience and hosting them through our resell store. I wish I had this sooner 🙂 I just missed a resell opportunity because I didn’t have a good understanding on how to use it, however, not all was lost, I did earn a good affiliate commission 🙂
David says
Thanks Lisa, that is fantastic, I had no idea that you could make residual income like that. I agree with you, it is very important to develop that residual income.
Without something like that which is not dependent on you-know-who, a business is at risk. Thanks again. Great to learn new stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Steve Hippel says
This is a good way to build a residual income Lisa.
I recently released a small video course aimed at small businesses. I sell my own hosting and recommend a well know hosting company as an alternative. That way I give a choice and get the best of both worlds.

I wonder how much customer service a reseller of hosting would do? well, obviously it would depend on how many people want to do business with you.
successful hosting and domain companies have help desks, … would a successful reseller need to take on this same role?
lisa says
I visited the Call Center Friday in Arizona. They have a team dedicated to reseller support. We actually got to walk in on a class and they had all the rules on the board for how they should handle our customers. It was actually very cool. The support for the resellers is no different from the parent company. They treat them the same. I wouldn’t resell for a company unless this was the case.
Zarko says
Great guidance, as always. I’m curious, do you buy privacy with your domains (so that your home address doesn’t show) and what’s your opinion on that? I’ve been using it so far, but when your domain pool grows you discover you can save quite a bit if you buy just the domain without any add-ons.
lisa says
No, I just use a PO Box.
Tony Rovere says
Diversification is great, but could this apply to everyone?
If we aren’t in the ‘website building’ business, do you feel this would be a reliable source of income?
Teaching people to build websites for residual income is great, but if it isn’t our niche would it be a good idea?
Just curious what your thoughts were on the subject.
lisa says
No, that’s why I said it’s not for everyone. It helps if you know people (especially locally) who need websites. Then you could set their sites up for them if you wish and have them use your store. But if you don’t know many people who need websites this will not be profitable.
aj says
sorry lisa i should clarify that last question:
How do you go about marketing website palace to people you don’t know directly (and other than on your site) since you are essentially competing with the same larger named domain/hosting companies on the web?
lisa says
Because I get traffic to 2createawebsie.com directly so I use that site to direct to my store. Believe it or not, not everyone goes directly to the parent company. I get a lot of traffic from people who are on Blogger or some other free host and when they decide to go paid, they use my store because I’ve helped them and built up credibility.
aj says
ok thanks. so do you still get a nice influx of new sign-ups? or do u see most of your income from residual payments made from long-time customers?
sorry, i don’t mean to be “all in your pockets” … i’m just trying to determine if this is something i should revisit as a source of passive income.
lisa says
Yes, I still recruit people everyday, but what I do really has nothing to do with your potential performance since it’s going to depend how well you can attract people to your site (online or offline) that need websites. There are people who do waaaaay better than me and waaaaay worse just depending on their audience. As you can see in the graphic, the top reseller made $50,000 in commissions last month so there is still plenty of business to be had. 🙂
aj says
hi lisa,
nice article. just a quick 2 questions. i have a niche similar to you which makes sense because i’m a web designer during the day. i also had a reseller account via godaddy similar to yours … do you use godaddy? bluehost? or someone else?
I had a reseller account for a little bit, but I found it hard to convince people to purchase domains and hosting via my godaddy reseller account (which was rebranded). I ended up switching over to an affiliate option which I get a nice payout from.
How do you go about marketing website palace (other than on your site) since you are essentially competing with the same of the larger named domain/hosting companies on the web?
Stephen says
Hi Lisa, I like the sound of this, plus I also like the sound of teaching people offline to build wordpress sites. I have also done this for three friends ofcourse with out pay but can see the demand.
I shall look into setting up an account since I expect more work but never thought about reselling.
Zack Lim says
Hi Lisa,
I found your blog post from Google and I am glad to read this content.
It is an interesting idea to help offline people or corporate companies to create their website for free but earn on the monthly recurring commission.
It seems like a good way to start another stream of income to diversify the risks. I agree with your point that there are many people who wanted to have their own website and there is a big market outside.
Thank you for creating and sharing this good blog post 🙂

Hi Lisa
Great to find out more about you, i have tried at hosting and domain reselling but i still relied on Google far too much lol.
I think to survive Googles updates we should look at new media such as Podcasts or channels on YouTube or even focus on our Facebook Fan page, there is loads of traffic here to be tapped into.
Thanks
Dave
lisa says
Couldn’t agree more. Diversification is key.
Michael Belk says
That is an excellent way to earn money, but like you said I do not qualify yet, but I am happy for you.
Dave says
I have been toying with the idea of a brick and mortar store where I would help people out with starting a website. Do you see this as a way to increase your residual income chances? I could also promote stuff like SBI too.
lisa says
Hi Dave,
Many of the resellers I met at the conference are doing a lot of more offline training/teaching, and I think there is a lot of opportunities in the OFFLINE world. The “build a website” space is so competitive online now, that’s why I wanted to focus more on what resellers were doing offline.
So yes, if you have the right audience this could go over big for you. If you think about it, that’s what I do online so you would just be using my model offline.
There’s a small store in a mall near my house where a designer has rented out a space to create sites for people. I don’t know if he’s a reseller but if you have the money that’s a great way to draw traffic to your reseller business.
Sergio Felix says
Hey Lisa,
I actually have a shared account and a reseller account as well but I didn’t set up a shop to sell hosting.
My reasons for the reseller account were mostly for:
1. Creating sites and flipping them over.
2. Host small sites for local clients and small projects of my own that I can outsource and don’t have to give away my own login credentials.
Great to see how you are monetizing yours!
When you offer hosting, is it ‘unlimited’ space for your clients?
Sergio
PS. Of course there’s no such thing as ‘unlimited’ but it is different to read unlimited than to be aware of a space limit cap (which I do have) in my own reseller account.
lisa says
Hey Sergio,
So true on the unlimited piece. Yes, my largest plans come with “unlimited” space but most people by the cheaper plans which have a GB limit — which of course 95% of people never even come close. 🙂 But I do have quite a few that opt for the unlimited plans.
Jonny Rowntree (@JonnyRowntree) says
Hi Lisa,
Great post. I often resell any domains that perhaps aren’t of any interest to me anymore. I find NameCheap has a great marketplace which allows you to do this seamlessly and I’ve probably generated $50 in about 6 months from this feature.
I may try reselling hosting in the future though as there isn’t much difference in price between sharing and reseller hosting.
lisa says
Hey Jonny
I think what you’re doing is a little different from me. You are actually selling domains you bought. What I do is more affiliate based (even though I’m technically reselling). So if someone wants a website, they buy domains from my store and I earn a commission.
Although I wish I could get into the domain flipping business. I didn’t realize NameCheap had a marketplace to sell your domains.
Jonny Rowntree (@JonnyRowntree) says
Hi Lisa,
Thanks for the reply. I did once advertise Namecheap on my site as an affiliate but I found actually buying domains for $8 and selling them double (sometimes more) worked better for me.
Domain flipping is good if you have the time and creativity for it but it all depends on what brings you the most benefits. I must admit though, NameCheap is one of the best places to sell domains.
