It’s really crazy that I’ve never created a complete video presentation on content marketing and website creation for people who want to learn how it all works.
Occasionally I’ll see YouTube comments that say, “Hey, how do I start making money?” Plus, I’m constantly answering the same questions over and over again via email, Facebook, etc.
Even though I have a lot of info on my site, some prefer visuals.
So it was time for me to create a video that contains a lot of getting-started info all in one place.
And I finally tackle some of the MENTAL mistakes to avoid even BEFORE you begin.
Who Is This For?
Now, if you’ve been following me for awhile and are already finding your way with your website, you may not learn too much.
However, you will finally get to hear about about my keyword research strategy. The post about my experimental site generated so much curiosity about my process that it was time to address it.
I can tell you now. Some of you are going to be very inspired, and others are going to be disappointed — depending on how methodical you are when doing certain tasks.
I’m a person who goes with my gut and relies very little on what the numbers say. So no matter how my strategy is perceived, I’m glad to finally set the record straight.
Both videos are pretty long. So if you are a more seasoned content marketer, you may prefer to watch the videos on YouTube so you can jump to the desired sections.
I added markers in the description to make it easy to skip to different parts.
Video 1 – Topic Choice, Keyword Research and Common Mistakes
This video is great for people who are just getting started or having trouble getting out the gate. In one section I discuss why I believe certain topics perform better than others.
For example, the buying mood that your visitor is in when they arrive at your site plays a tremendous role in converting sales and making money. This is an aspect many people ignore when brainstorming.
I also discuss passion vs. earning potential and the mistakes people make regarding topic choice.
And finally, the video ends with an explanation for why I don’t believe you need to look for very high demand (monthly searches) when using keyword research tools.
Video 2 – Website Creation, Traffic and SEO
In this video you will get an update on my Site Build It! site and I’ll also share the pros and cons of the two building methods I suggest.
There is also a very detailed section on search engine optimization (SEO) and backlinks. Discover what I think about certain strategies like guest blogging, forum signatures, directory submissions and other backlink building activities in 2013 and going forward.
I still believe there is too much misleading information about SEO these days, so I discuss what Google really wants and why you can’t rely on search engine optimization anymore.
Your Support is Appreciated
I covered a lot of ground in these two videos, so I hope you enjoyed them. If you found the videos useful, please rate and share. Thanks in advance. 🙂
Don’t forget to subscribe to my channel so you can keep up with my videos. I recently passed the 50,000 subscriber mark and I am truly humbled by all the support.
Thanks so much for taking time out of your day to watch and I wish you all the best with your websites!

A great post which I find myself totally agree with the point that great content for the customers to keep them coming back is far more important than writing content just to rank high on google. Thanks for sharing.

good point on SEO, while doing the basics should be inherent in any site building initiative, SEO alone does not help as much as SEs have completely changed the way their algorithms determine the “best” site to show for a search query.

Hi Lisa, I am a keen follower and watch 2-5 of your videos DAILY.
I started a weather website, http://www.Kasimsweatherwatcher.com back in April and was receiving 50-80 daily visitors, bear in mind I had a “pre-established” audience on the social media sites before I launched my site and had been doing youtube videos since the December 2012.
By implementing most of your tactics into my method’s and putting on the right mindset, I have managed to increase daily traffic from April to June from 50-80 to 300-400 and growing Very quickly. It, is, of course, all about physiology (not the website). Getting yourself inside the mind of the visitor. What they want to see next. What they like to see. But, it’s all about the webmaster thoroughly enjoying what they’re doing. I, as an example, am very passionate about increasing website traffic and my topic. Google analytics addict lol :).
Thanks for all your help, a useful resource.

You never fail me. I got SBI because of your recommendation and it hasn’t failed me. I made the mistake of taking the long, scenic route rather than doing what Ken said about keeping the SBI blinders on. When you mentioned you were going to give your opinion about it, of course my ears perked up. I like what you said and find it to be true. I’m thankful for your candor. And I like the fact that your finger is on the pulse, so I have a bunch of my questions answered — even the FIVERR comment. That was me, contemplating, while I was out in drift mode. My next post, the first in MONTHS, which will be posted either today or tomorrow is: THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME (meaning SBI). THANKS!!!

Yaaaay! Glad I could help. Just saw your comment in the forums. Thanks for joining! See ya there!

Hey Lisa,
Thanks for making and sharing this very helpful video series. One reason why I am a blog writer is because I don’t really have the talent in video making and stuff related to it. I’m sure that you’ve worked had for the videos and its just fitting to share this very informative videos. As much as I love to read, there are just times that I want to watch rather than reading, so making a video tutorial is not a bad idea at all. I hope you’ll use another infographic post combined with short clips. Well, I may be a little bit demanding with it, but its just my way of sharing my thoughts.

Thanks Lisa for this. Especially for first video with explanation why You don’t believe we need to look for very high demand while using keyword research tools.

I am agree with jack You gave me an informative thing that is needed to know for SEO.
Thanks a lot 😀
stephanie says
I definitely agree with you when it comes to SEO. It has changed a lot over the last few years and it’s much more harder online today than it used to be a few years ago. It’s not fair the advantage early adopters have over those of us trying to start today. I’ve recently come across an article about a guy called Lorne Marr who set up his business here in Canada and then decided to penetrate the online insurance market. In the end he was successful and now he runs a multimillion-dollar business. It’s crazy that he managed to achieve this using only PPC and SEO. Do you think it would still be possible today?
Lisa Irby says
I think it is but you need a bit of luck involved in terms of choosing the right niche and it’s harder to find a “good” niche that isn’t somewhat saturated. As far as SEO, I think it’s harder to build an SEO-dependent business today (not that you should anyway) but you can master PPC still. The biggest issue with PPC is it’s VERY costly. You have to spend money to make money and it takes time to learn how to convert.
Carl says
I think few myths just got completely busted. By the way nice videos and I’ve subscribed to your YouTube channel. Well, generally I think everybody should stick to basics, however some originality and a bit of twist on every system would definitely unleash the power.

Thank you Lisa. You gave an informative thing that is needed to know for SEO.If the links are low quality then use the Google Disavow tool to tell Google to ignore them.

As the same domain name with .com and some more extensions is already booked.

Hi Lisa,
I want some help from your side. I blog at http://www.youthhotspot.com, but i left it for 3 months or so. When i start blogging again, my backlines were near about 900+ on alexa and i have no idea how they automatically showed up. I never used any trip and all these links are from very low quality sites.
My site ranking is affect a lot after all this. Please suggest me some methods to delete these links and regain my site’s reputation.
Please ! :/
Lisa Irby says
If the links are low quality then use the Google Disavow tool to tell Google to ignore them. But be careful with the Google Disavow tool because they say you should ONLY use it if you received an unnatural links warning in your Google Webmaster Tool account. And you don’t know which links are hurting or helping. Also those links may not necessarily be the cause for your loss of rank. Google is constantly making changes. So make sure you read more on the Google Disavow tool and when you should use it before making a decision. Your ranking may have dropped because of a freshness update. Google often decreases the ranking of a site that is stale.

Hi Lisa, I am the type of person who prefers visual rather than reading blog entry full of text because I find it too boring to read. Anyway, I love the tips that you’ve discussed on the video and you manage to explain it very well. Hi lisa, i have always loved your blogposts and videos.
Thanks for answering my previous query. Got 1 more question-
A domain i want to choose has all .com and other extensions booked. I’ll love to have that domain name, so i want to go for .org as its the only 1 left or other unfamiliar extensions.
Will you recommend a .org domain for a portfolio website?
Sunil - Extra Money Blog says
nice post Lisa – much needed.
I have shifted most of my focus away from niche sites to authority sites. a solid content site is the way to go in my opinion and what I am experiencing, and I know it’s the same for you having established several successful authority sites now.
good point on SEO, while doing the basics should be inherent in any site building initiative, SEO alone does not help as much as SEs have completely changed the way their algorithms determine the “best” site to show for a search query.
many traditional marketing/link building methods are also becoming obsolete. what is helping however is content creation and diversified distribution wouldn’t you agree from your experience? what I mean is repurposing content and syndicating via various mediums (text, video, audio, etc)
Lisa Irby says
Completely agree. I have also started to experiment with infographs as well. So looking to do some experimentation in that area. Times are a’changin but content still rules. 🙂

Lisa – thanks for all the great info in both videos. It was good to hear you go more into depth on topics like keyword research and link building. I’m new to your site and see there’s tons of great content and advice here.

Hi Lisa,
thanks for creating these videos. I’m downloading them and can’t wait to watch them in double speed. 🙂 I enjoy your method of work, because it’s simple and relies on organic growth, rather than exclusively on some short-term SEO optimizing stuff.
By the way, I didn’t know you are from Dallas, Texas! I was there in 2011 and LOVED the place!
Have a nice day,

Good realization, Richard. You’re the kind of person I REALLY wanted to reach in this video because I have come across so many people with the same mindset. So that was one topic I really wanted to address.

Hi Lisa,
Another great video series! I’m one of those that listened to both videos and didn’t even think of the time, it passed so quickly and I hung on every word. This will be great to pass on to my relatives that are thinking of starting their own blogs/websites, and just at the right time for them. Don’t feel like you need to apologize for the length of them, it’s not a big deal when there’s excellent content to listen to.
Lisa Irby says
Thanks Cathryn, I was concerned about the length but it doesn’t seem to be an issue based on a few comments I’ve read on YouTube. Appreciate it. 🙂
Sam says
The length? 46 minutes feel like 2. You simply just rock….
Lisa Irby says
LOL, thanks Sam!

Wow, this is excellent I know how much effort it takes to make a decent 10 minute video.
I agree, you definitely can’t depend on Google for search traffic especially with their blocking of the search terms that people are using to find websites (not provided).
I’m like, “come on man.”

This is great! I’ve been meaning to mention to you that you could make your YouTube videos available for mp3 download. Quite often I listen to podcasts while making dinner, cleaning the house etc and I would always like to put your advice on repeat

Thank you Lisa! I have shared this video series. I have tried so many of your tips!
