2 Create a Website

Lisa’s Website Traffic “Secret” [Video]

March 10, 2009 · 31 comments

One of the biggest challenges I face with teaching people how to market their sites online is the constant comparing.  People want to know exactly what I did to draw in so much traffic over the years because they are convinced if they do the same, they’ll have the same (or similar) results.

One guy even accused me of keeping my REAL traffic tips a secret because he just couldn’t seem to get enough traffic to his website.  He requested that I write out a list of everything I did from day one to generate traffic to 2 Create a Website.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to learn from someone who is already seeing success, but you have to remember the Internet has evolved.  Yes, many of the techniques I used years ago still work, but a lot of them don’t anymore.

In the video below I discuss why new Webmasters have to be careful about doing direct comparisons with more established websites when it comes to traffic building…

And just for the record, there are no secrets when it comes to building traffic.

You raise a very good point what works for one company may or may not work for another. All webmasters should take the “advice” they recieve and figure out what works for them.

You are so right about that. Some of the things I have done on my own blog, people have said it wouldn’t drive traffic actually did. Other methods that have been praised didnt apply to me. I think every niche is going to have a different result.

And the secrets start coming out ;-) …how do I get inbound links without doing link exchanges. Articles are one option, but do you have any other suggestions.

Do you suggest webmasters to use Advertisers like Google and Yahoo to promote their website?

I remember reading about when to create a forum. Would it be a negative thing to create a forum too early? Like, is it possible to screw it up for good?

Also, how do you know when a picture is copyrighted? Do you recommend I buy pictures…I actually need a few high quality pictures to go along with the theme of my site. And where do you recommend I go to purchase pictures? I am on a budget. (where do you get your pictures?)

BTW, the site I have now is not up yet. It probably won’t be for a month or two, I decided to change the entire design and to add more content. But if you can answer my questions it would be great…thanks…still frustrated though….

Android, to be honest I haven’t done much “link building lately” That was why I did the video. Even though I promote myself on Twitter, Youtube, etc. I do very little “link building”. Most of my links come from people who voluntarily link to me because they value my content. Posting in forums, commenting on blogs and doing guest articles for other bloggers are a few ways to get more links.

I get my pictures from Photos.com. It’s very expensive and wouldn’t recommend it for someone on a budget but I love it ’cause they have everything and they are high quality. Try http://www.sxc.hu/

You should not create a forum until you have hundreds (maybe even thousands) of visitors per day. Keep working on building unique content and make sure you are focusing on a specific angle to make your site stand out. These days it’s all about popularity. The more unique, useful and fresh your site is, the more people will voluntarily link to you and the more traffic you’ll get over time.

Hi Lisa,

I totally agree with your points above. Every person has their own style of doing a business regardless of what industry they are involved with. E.g. Observe 2 newspaper vendor and you might find that they are distributing it differently.

To me, the onus of finding out or improving how one can build a business of their own is to go on a trial-and-error basis. If you have not learnt how to fail, you will not have gain the experiences you want !

Ignore those people who wants you to spoon feed them because they want an easy path, which is not possible. Also, I feel that as long you are answering them the questions they asked, you have done your role unless they have paid you for the service they want. But, it still does not means that you have to teach them everything because some of the information you have, may or may not be suitable for the individual you are corresponding with.

There are plenty of “gurus” out there providing ways and means to generate Traffic for your website but it is our responsibilities to read and understand it so that we can explore what works best for us. Nothing venture nothing gain !

Like in Network Marketing, there are some who will join you thinking that with your help, they will be the next millionaire without putting any effort into it. But we all know that its still boil down to the individual DISCIPLINE !

You are going great !

Cheers !
William

Hi Lisa.
I would like to know this: Once you got enough traffic on your SBI site, lets say 5000visitors a day. Is it possible or recomendable to change to another server?

Hi Joia

It sure is. You own the domain and are free to move it where you’d like.

Hey Lisa,

Good job with this site. I’ve found several of your blog articles to be quite insightful. Thank you for sharing. I do have one minor suggestion, though. The social bookmarking “buttons” you have at the end of your blog posts open up in the same tab/window instead of opening up a new tab or window. I believe you have mentioned in the past that you want to stop short of navigating your visitors away from your site. A simple target=”_blank” attribute on those social bookmarking links would solve that problem ;)

Lisa,

I have only just come across this blog and genuinely find it useful.

I can understand just what you mean when you say you don´t really do “link building” as such. The key to this is to provide useful, insightful information and the links will follow.

I am trying to do this and will continue to produce original, helpful insight into the area I am blogging about.

Keep up the great, inspirational work.

For myself, I love understanding how things work. If there is a highly successful Internet Marketer out there I’m like Inspector Morse, I’ll research and deconstruct what they have done to achieve their results with the objective of understanding how and why they get such great results.

More often than not I come to this conclusion, the things they do are pretty damn complicated. They dot all the I’s and cross all the T’s, and usually there are a lot of I’s and T’s!

Once I understand how the machine works, I can then take it apart and redesign it so to speak and create a modified version which suits myself, my niche and my promotion style.

I am confused with some thing on my site? I use statpress on my WP suite , and it says i average about 100-200 page views, and hits i get 10-40 a day? I googled pageviews, but im not sure what it means? Does it mean i get web hits from people??????

Reply

24 lisa June 23, 2009 at 12:20 pm

You can get 10-40 unique visitors per day and 100-200 page views. That means those 10-40 people viewed between 100 and 200 pages.
