Earn More With AdSense by Targeting Channels

Google is reminding AdSense publishers to target channels to help maximize earnings for the upcoming Holidays.  If you don’t understand what that means, this video will shed some light…

The take-home lesson here is that if you have high-performing channels, it makes sense to allow targeting because placement advertisers will seek them out — especially if you have units near the top of the page.

Placement advertisers want to be featured on units with good click-thru ratios that are placed above the fold.

It may even be worth experimenting and creating new units on heavily trafficked pages just to capitalize on the placement advertiser’s interest.

Now, a word of caution about all this…

Don’t forget to keep your site’s overall monetization goals in mind.  You may not want AdSense ads competing with your top earning affiliate programs or products you sell.

However, if you have high-traffic pages that don’t necessarily support sales for your main products, why not try to generate more AdSense earnings through placement targeting?

So make it a goal to target those channels as soon as possible!

Weird, this page is completly non related to what I was looking up on google, however it’s listed on the first page?! I assume that your doing something right if Google trusts your site enough to put it on the first page of a unrelated search.:)

    Dear Lisa,

Just to let other readers know that placement ads are way better than contextual ones. A placement ad can make you at least 5 times more money than contextual ads. But most of the times we get less than 50 clicks from placement ads while the contextual ads get good number of clicks. I wish I could control that :).

Hey, Lisa. Just coming back to thank you again for this thread. After making some recent changes in my layout, my targeted ad channels started getting some clicks! I guess its possible that the new layout caused more of these types of ads to show up on my site. I’m glad I took a couple of minutes to set this up and I imagine that this can become a higher percentage of income as the site grows – I’m soooo ready for the holiday shopping season, thanks.

I was curious about the targeting channels but also cautious since I’m reluctant to change anything in my Adsense setting, you know I have ‘penalized syndrome’ and the ‘earnings down syndrome’. I will go ahead with these changes. Thanks

Ok Lisa I logged into AdSense and followed your instructions. That was a nice pre-holiday gift you just gave us.

It was pretty easy to do and it turned out that I had one old channel that was targetable but not my new (most important) one. Thank you.

Great video Lisa (again) 🙂 For those using the new Adsense interface, check your contextual vs. placement incomes by:

    1. Clicking on “Performance reports” button found on the top nav bar.

    2. Click on “More reports” button on the left column and select “Targeting types”

    Cheers!

i implemented this immediately after Google had sent the email one 2 of my websites, on certain pages that are not marketing affiliate products or my own. there has been no change on one, but the other has shown a 9% increase, which for my numbers is a large amount. advertisers have already started holiday season marketing and it is showing. the topic of your website will determine to a great extent the incremental benefit in results you will see…

I think that if you have a better monetization channel – you hsould abandon AdSense at all. I’ve seen incomes 10x more than AdSense on very average sites. AdSense just takes that income at 10x less rate. But if you don’t have any other options – that’s still a good way to go.

Great Article Lisa, Great tips but this is probably where most people have to be careful ” You may not want AdSense ads competing with your top earning affiliate programs or products you sell.” Because in long run you will be making more money from the product you sell then Goodle ads,

WOW that made perfect sense! I also feel that it is important for us to know where we are making the most money in adsense. If we don’t, then its like making money without knowing whose signing the checks. Its important for us to push for more monetization efforts for the up coming holidays as it seems to be a “cash cow” for many affiliates.

Exactly. Also make sure that you link your Analytics and AdSense accounts together so you can see what pages are earning the most.
