Last week I wrote about the new and improved Ad Review Center (ARC) that began rolling out last month.
Now that my account has been upgraded, I wanted to publish a video that highlights some of the ARC features.
In addition, you’ll learn more about some of the common AdSense reports and how to maximize your earnings through Placement targeting.
You Will Also Learn…
- Why you shouldn’t block too many ads
- Info about auctions and ad pricing
- How some Publishers are also making money from CPM ads (impressions only)

Hi Bradley,
My first thought for you is to join Lisa’a forum.
http://www.websitebabble.com/
Tell them “esmconcepts” sent you.
I noticed on your site “Your About page” you do not have a space after your periods or commas.
This is letting a lot of your sites content become un-readable by the spiders. Thee are several things that might have caused this, but it should be fixed.
Join the forum and ask some more question. I am sure you will find the answers you want and need there.
I will be watching,
Steve / esmconcepts

Hey Lisa, great video! I left a comment over on YouTube that might explain why I had so many questions on your post last week. For the most part I am seeing exactly what you are in my AdSense account with one exception – I do not have a link for “Shown Ads”. Once I figure out that mystery, everything else will start to become clear. I wonder if anyone else sees what I have – which is “Awaiting Review”. Just like you, I’m not holding any ads for review so perhaps this is a glitch in my report. If I find out anything, I’ll let you know. Thanks again for taking the time to make the video. It is very helpful.

Hey pop, if you read the comments above Ileane was having the same problem but it was only a matter of time before her account fully updated. So you may just be in the in-between stage.

Hi Lisa,
very strange on my site ist that placement gets worst CPC and RPM.
I’m really considering to stop alowwing placements.
Interest based ads gets best RPM, because of the best CTR.
So my site, or better the behaviour of my visitors, is very different from yours.
lisa says
Yep, that’s why I always tell people you can’t really use other people’s stats to estimate or predict what will happen. Very interesting that interest based ads perform best. They usually do pretty poorly on my site.

Lisa, AdSense updated my account and now I’m seeing “Shown Ads”! Yay! Now I can go back and watch your video again and follow any of your tips. I feel a lot better knowing that they were in the process of rolling out the changes to everyone just like Flo mentioned. Now I’m on the same page with the rest of you guys. LOL!!

I have been following your site for the last couple of months and found your site very interesting in many ways. Your writings are very encouraging and I do read your latest blogs. In the beginning I could not find any ads on yours site. So I thought I’ll check the browser settings. But I found nothing wrong. And finally I realized that I have installed an anti virus, which was blocking the advertisements on literally all the websites I was browsing, including yours. Now the question, what is point writing so much about making money online and one day you find that your targeted audiences did not see the advertisements at all. All most all anti viruses block all kind of ads, banners etc.
lisa says
Hi Arun
I’m sure that happens and there’s nothing you can really do about that. That’s why you have to diversify your income and not just make money from ads. I also am an affiliate marketer and sell my own products.
arun says
Lisa,
Thank you for replying and yes you are right. We will have to be careful about some of the blind spots on the web. Affiliate marketing is good, so we can have complete control on what we present to our viewers.
Just keep up the good work.

great post, Google are getting far too complicated for me these days
this post has helped me think about adsense though…thanks!
Steve says
You have closer to what I wanted in the way of the structure. I originally had category/PostID/PostName/. I had read it was good because it got more keyword’s into the address bar and links.
But, it also got LOOONG, and now it seems the best permalink’s are a number system (date or post ID) then the post name. I now use PostID/PostName/. The cats will come up by their name only when the cat is selected.
So with the way your setup now, i would not change, and I agree, you have ton of post and links to re-index, and it would take a lot of effort to make sure everything transferred over to the new system.
Keep your feet warm, your OK.
Steve says
I had switched to a static home page just a few days ago due to Lisa’s guidance.
I did all the 301’s, new sitemap, informed Big G, etc. But I have noticed a few blips.
But!, I did make a joke on her forum during her birthday about her age being a point or two lower then her bowling average.
NEVER mention a woman’s bowling average! She will send you to the spam bin.
Forgive me my Queen,
Steve
lisa says
ha ha ha! That’s right, Steve! Grrrrr. 🙂
Steve says
By the way. The static home page deal is really going to work well.
I did change my permalink settings at the same time, so that is a re-index issue, but should be done in a day or two.
I know this is not the right post for (Static Page) comments, but to let everyone know, It was a good move and will provide a better promotion of my site for SEO reasons.
Thanks for that kick in the head also Lisa. I own ya.
Steve
lisa says
I thought about doing the permalink switch but since my blog is so mature I feared something going wrong and a huge mishap with my SEO traffic. I know they have 301 redirect plugins but I got cold feet. lol Glad you got everything working again.
ChuckM says
Well, I have no idea what that was all about, but over the past two hours things seem to have returned to normal…. Strange disturbance in the “force” I guess… Lol… 🙂 Fantastic vido.

Oh good! Glad the force is back with you. 🙂

Hi Lisa,
Nice video and useful.

Steve, lol… I doubt she hates you… I see you just fine.
Stephen says
Great video Lisa, as I am new to AdSense every little tip helps and you are no1 for this, thank you.
Ajnabii says
Hi Lisa,
Thank you so much for making this useful video for us, I’m surprised how Ad Placement works. I’ve just blocked some competitor Ads, but my earning going down. I have lot of Advertisers but same earning is down. would you please suggest me how to increase my earning ?
ChuckM says
Hee hee… I just went from right at 50.00 to 100.00 per day, to just over 1.00! I’ve made 1.79 in two days rather than 100.00 to 200.00… I have no idea how this happened.
What’s really odd is that I did this to a channel that was not doing well, and not on my good earning channels (I wanted to test before doing anything to my money earning sites). But, the plunge into the center of the earth, is across all my sites and channels. I undid what I did, but no change.
lisa says
I really doubt it has to do with changing the targeting. When you target your channels it’s not doing anything but telling Placement advertisers that you have a spot for them to bid on.
And since Placement targeted ads pay MORE than contextual, it’s unlikely that would cause the shift. Remember, Google is working hard to get you the highest paying ads in your spots because you both make more money when that happens.
The fact that you undid everything also shows it had little to do with placement targeting. It could just be a seasonal change and the big advertisers that were earning you the money have lowered their budgets.
I’ve seen huge drops and then a few days later, huge gains. A lot depends on the advertisers and what they are spending.
I believe it was just a coincidence that the change happened the same time you changed targeting. Always keep in mind, Google is on your side. They want you to earn the most because when you do, they do too. So don’t worry, you’re earnings will probably rebound.
ChuckM says
Hmm? I’ve been making good money since 2009, and I’ve never had anything like this happen – minor setbacks yes, major losses of money – no. It happened the exact same day I made the change – instantaneously we could say…
“So don’t worry, you’re earnings will probably rebound.”
He- he… Oh, I’m more than worried. And, I do hope you are correct. I put things back they way they were just a few hours ago, so I’ll know more tomorrow. I’m not upset with you at all, I’m just checking to see what other people have experienced and looking for a possible solution. I see I’m not the only person that has seen income go down rather than up. ajnabiicom blocked some ads, which makes his situation a little different than mine, as I did not block any ads, only set the targeting. Weird that we all have such different interfaces as well.
Well, back to work I go. Thanks for the response!
lisa says
Well I sincerely hope things bounce back. Have you tried the google forums to see if anyone else has shared your experience?
ChuckM says
I’m trying to figure out what just happened. I set a few of my ads to Targeting as you showed in the video and my CTR just crashed to 0.28%… I was right at 3% and just lost a bunch of money over the past two days…. Any suggestions?
Zhariane says
Users of the AdSense reports inside of Google Analytics may have noticed that there have been discrepancies between the AdSense reports in Google Analytics and AdSense since March 16th. We’re aware of the issue and a fix is being rolled out at this time. The cause of the issue is not related to the new version of Google Analytics.
Ryan Sprout says
Hi Lisa,
Thank you for this informative post. I agree with blocking too many ads that may lower earnings with adsense! When I first started monetizing with adsense, I tried to block ads that I thought were not relevant to my site, but it turned out that having all open categories worked better for me!
Becca says
Your are very remarkable Lisa.Sounds like a good opportunity for newbies to learn about the great potentials on Adsense.

Hi Lisa,
As always, good fresh relevant content to help web marketeers with the current changes from Google.

You never fail to enlighten me with quality guidance and profitable ideas.

Hi Lisa
Thank you very much for making this video that I requested a couple of days ago 😉 This is what I call great service.
March has just been by far the best month I have ever had with AdSense making me even more motivated to learn some new AdSense tips. I have just got access to the Ad review center on my account, so the timing of this video is great. When it comes to Targeting type I am making most of my money from Contextual ads. I have almost no Placement ads. I guess that it have something to do with the popularity of a blog right?
Well I think that I promised you to help you sharing this post if you were making this video, so I better get started.
Have a great day Lisa and thank you for another great video.
lisa says
You’re welcome, Thomas! Yes, just keep on working hard. Once your blog continues to get more popular you will attract those placement advertisers. Also, they tend to like bigger ad units near the top of the page so having those kinds of units help too. Since they pay more money, they often like bigger units.
Thita says
So sorry, Lisa, one more question; as I was looking at my report while watching your video, I also noticed that a good chunk of my earnings come from Interest Based Ads. But I have Interest Based Ads turned off. How is that possible? 😯
lisa says
Same here. As I said in the video the same thing happened to me and I’m not sure. Even when I turned it off I saw ads on my sites related to places I had visited. So apparently when you turn them off, Google still enables them. Maybe if an advertiser bids high enough they will override it (or if it’s from a placement advertiser)
Thita says
Lisa, thanks for this great video! I do have a question though. At the end you were saying that CMP ads are only earned from Placement Ads. However this is what I found in my account:
If I check my Placement Ads under Targeting Types Report for the Month of March, I have no clicks and no earnings from Placement Ads. (Yes, I do have placement ads allowed.)
However when I check under the Bid Types Report, I have a good amount of my earnings coming from CPM ads with a very healthy CPC.
So I’m confused; you said that CPM earnings can only come from Placement Ads. Or did I misunderstand something? 😕
lisa says
Interesting, if you read Google’s help it tells you that CPM ads are only from Placement targeted ads. Here’s what it reads and I quote: CPM ads can be either text or image ads and are always placement-targeted. Source: http://support.google.com/adsense/bin/answer.py?hl=en-GB&answer=18196
Google just keeps us on our toes don’t they?
Thita says
Lisa, thanks for the quick response! You rock! My hubby says that he knows the big secret behind Google; it is just a monkey getting loose on a keyboard somewhere. 😆
Jason Smith says
Thanks for the info Lisa.
I have Adsense on my sites, but after watching this video I think I’m missing out on a bunch as far as Adsense goes. I looked at my Adsense account and I don’t have anything under My ads -> Content. I don’t know what I should have under Ad Units, Custom Channels or URL Channels. Where can I get more info on what I should have in there?
Thanks much,
Jason
Jason says
Thanks for making this video Lisa. It was very helpful and informative.

Hi Lisa,i am new in Blogging Arean and i appyed for Google AdSense last month and got reject by google and they send me some issues. Now i changed my theme and again i want to apply for it. Before that i want your suggestion for my site.
Thanks.
I will wait for your reply.

Thank you Lisa! This is extremely helpful. I’m looking forward to trying this out.
Tuan @ TechWalls says
Placement ads used to be the top revenue source of my Adsense account but I don’t know why the coverage for placement ad on my site is now 0%. Anyone could suggest what could be the reason for this issue? And how could I get placement advertisers again?
lisa says
Have you done any major updates on your site recently? Specifically design changes or maybe moved some key ad units?
Tuan @ TechWalls says
Oh yes, I changed my WP theme over 1 month ago and the ad placements change as well. They almost happen at the same time. So, advertisers could just leave because I change my blog’s design? That’s weird.
lisa says
Well your placement or design may not attract as many as before. That’s one possible reason. The other reason could just be that advertisers in that niche may be spending less right now… there are many different reasons. It may not be just your design.
fernando says
great video, you´re the queen of adsense! it must be great to make money from impressions only.
Sunil l Entrepreneurship & Personal Finance says
good stuff Lisa, very timely.
the last few months i have noticed my total earnings significantly more than the sum of all my channels. (note: all my ad units are tied to channels).
i couldn’t figure this out – perhaps from CPM ads? but then again, i don’t recon modifying this option in my adsense dashboard. still a big mystery to me.
i am sure you have heard recently that many adsense accounts were closed by google, some owned by relatively “big” names, none of who i’d imagine would purposely violate TOS. any thoughts on this matter?
on a positive note, google adsense is still a solid source of income. some relatively new niche sites i established are making pretty good money from adsense. this is important encouragement for new internet marketers trying to profit from the adsense model.
lisa says
Really? That’s odd. Not sure how that would happen.
I honestly can’t say I’m surprised about the disabling. I never take it for granted and am really glad I would be OK without AdSense. No one knows what Google is doing anymore and we just have to diversify and build multiple sources of income.
Sunil l Entrepreneurship & Personal Finance says
“No one knows what Google is doing anymore” – SO TRUE, but isn’t that crazy or what?
lisa says
A few people were saying that some of those “big names” that got banned bought traffic and that can increase your chances of getting banned. It’s all speculation, though. These days it’s like walking on egg shells. lol

It is very helpful.
lisa says
I wonder why that is, Ileane. That’s kind of strange. Keep me posted on what you find. Glad the video was helpful, though.
Flo says
Hi Ileane, you’ll need to opt in to Ad Review Centre first before you can see the Show Ads, Blocked Ads and Settings links. To opt in, click “Overview” and you’ll see the link to opt in from. Hope this helps 🙂
lisa says
Oh good point, Flo. I guess I was assuming she had already done that given she can see the rest of what I’m seeing.
Ileane says
Lisa and Flo, I do have it turned on – so I have a big question mark over my head right now. LOL
I recorded a quick screencast, so you can see what my options are in AdSense. I’m hoping this might help someone else who is seeing the same as me.
Let me know what you think. Thanks!
http://screencast-o-matic.com/watch/clfeQnkQS
lisa says
Well just color me confused. LOL I also noticed that when you click Settings, you have some additional blocks underneath your “Run ads immediately” option that I do not have. I agree with you and I don’t think it has to do with your traffic. It just seems to be that there are various version of the ad review center. Very strange. Maybe they are still ironing things out but I wish they would clarify a few things because it’s a bit confusing. Thanks for making that video.
Flo says
Hi Ileane, I would have said that’s strange because what I have is the same as Lisa’s but I searched and found this documentation where they said something about renaming the Awaiting review tab to Upcoming Ads and the Allowed ads to Shown ads etc so maybe the new names have not taken effect in everyone’s account yet. http://support.google.com/adsense/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2471790&topic=28541&ctx=topic
You may also find solace in the fact that in Google’s screencasts about the ad review center, their tabs look exactly like yours 🙂 So I think that with time, the new names for the tabs will appear in your account.
lisa says
Very helpful find, Flo! Thanks for posting that as I’m sure it will help others.
Dave says
I like the fact that you can make money from impressions only. If it is a picture ad, the viewer may read it, so the website publisher should get something.
