A Guide for Starting a Website in 2016

It’s long overdue for me to create an updated, introductory video about starting a website today.

If you already have a website, you might be tempted to dismiss this post.

Please don’t skip this — especially the first video.

Part I – Domains and Hosting

Whether you have a website or not, you can’t miss the info I share about the state of the web hosting industry.

There’s a company that has been buying up many of the popular hosting companies, and I would suggest staying away from any company owned by them.

So if you’re hosting with BlueHost, Dreamhost, Hostgator, and many others… be sure to check out the first video.

Part II – WordPress Tips, Email Lists & Selling Products

The 2nd video is more instructional.

I start out with a short overview of WordPress theme selection, but then I go into details about…

  • Setting up a “What’s New” section for your blog content
  • Do you even need a blog in 2016?
  • Tips for creating and growing your email list
  • How I’m going to monitor email conversions differently
  • A preview of my new site’s setup
  • Plugins for selling products from WordPress

If you want to jump to the desired sections you want to watch, be sure to check the time stamps in the description of video 2.

If you watch from a desktop or laptop, you can click the time stamps to jump to the sections.

Hope you enjoy!

Hello Lisa, is it worth investing in creating an email list? Cannot be replaced by push notification or Facebook notification?

The problem with that is you don’t own Facebook. It’s always good to have a traditional list because you can’t assume these methods will be relevant forever. Will FB notifications be relevant 15 years from now? Maybe? Maybe not. But if you have emails, you can always contact people.

Agree. But I think that it will be great if you provide a text version of your videos on your website.
    What you say? 🙂

    Hi Liza
    Useful article for beginners.
I have experience with WordPress. I did some sites a few years ago.

I started a new site a couple of weeks ago. And I was surprised how easy it is now. For only $ 12 and 20 minutes of time I have a site on WordPress. For this money selling web hosting for one year and a domain for free. Seller godaddi.

The site is installed according to the instructions of only a few steps. it is really easy and quick.

Hello there Lisa, I have watched you for years and just want to say keep up the good work. You are one of the – what I like to call… Green Affiliate Marketers. It means that you’re honest and everlasting, because you are promoting clean energy affiliate marketing.

I just watched your 2 part video, and I wanted to say that I am a hostgator customer and must say that I too have heard a lot of people say that they have changed, and they’re no longer any good, but this is also said about all of the other web hosts out there. I have used a few different web hosts and must say that even though they are now owned by a new company, they are still the best, in my own opinion of course.

I have had some bad experiences with them all, even hostgator, but I like their promptness.

Thanks for the great videos and keep up the great work.

    Hello Lisa,

If I said this before I’ll say it again… the content that you pump out are oozing with awesomeness!!! ??? So generous of you to share the knowledge specially on the hosting situation… I wouldn’t have known that those popular brands are being monopolized now if I hadn’t seen your videos.

I know that you have stopped recommending SBI a couple of years ago. Having said that, do you have any alternative for those who are less tech savvy? I mean in this day and age, how hard is it really to maintain a wordpress site? I mean part of the beauty of SBI is that it lifts the technical challenge for people who doesn’t want to do anything with it… But if SBI system and process is not working anymore, would you say that wordpress is easy enough to maintain (be secured)?

      Hi Kristian

Thank you so much. I really think you should use WordPress. First of all, it’s the industry standard now — for newbies too and there are a GAZILLION tutorials online. With so many people using it, there will always be great support and add-ons for the product.

As far as security goes, that’s when you want to think about choosing a managed hosted like WP Engine. They handle all the security on the backend. That is definitely something to consider because WP does have risk simply because it’s run on PHP, where SBI! uses static HTML sites and they don’t pose a risk.

A few years ago I would say that it’s not necessary to spend money on managed hosting, but after what I’ve been through with WordPress, the free plugins out here are sometimes not enough. I ended up signing up with Sucuri and it scans my site for malware daily. But it’s pricey. My suggestion would be to look for a Managed WordPress host like WP Engine because they really do handle security well on the backend.

I bet if you go on YouTube and watch some tutorials you’ll get comfy with WordPress really quickly and having a managed host with the extra backend help can give you more peace of mind.

Thanks again for the superb blog post, Lisa. We can always count on you to not only keep it real, but to name names and call things how they are. That’s the kind of stuff a lot of marketers are squeamish about. And also the kind of stuff that makes your content so informative and valuable. Cheers!
