Google +1 – More Social SHARE-nanigans!

Filed Under: Google+, SEO 130 Comments

Google Plus OneAm I the only one getting tired of the social sharing mania?  Really, it’s getting to be too much for me.

I know it’s the world we live in now, and as a blogger/webmaster/affiliate marketing I often feel the pressure to keep up when it comes to adding these buttons to my site.

So of course, when Google announced that we could add the functionality to our sites last week, I installed the button like any diligent marketer would. 🙂

But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t tired of seeing countless speculation posts about what it is and isn’t going to do for our business, rankings, etc.  The blogosphere has been going Plus One crazy since it launched.

One hair blogger I follow even wrote a post asking her visitors to Plus One her content so she could get a rankings boost.  Seriously? An entire post dedicated to begging for Plus One clicks?

Google did admit that it’s going to have an impact on SEO.  How much, of course, we’ll never know since Google keeps its algorithm info locked down better than the gold at Fort Knox.  But for some reason I feel the impact will be minimal… at least for now.

Now of course Google +1 will provide both personal and business conveniences and benefits (especially if you’re an avid Google user.)  I just feel like the Net is on sharing overload sometimes.

To Add or Not to Add?

So should you install +1 on your site?

Sure, why not?  It’s free, takes up very little room and…

It’s Google — the #1 search engine accused of trying to control the Internet and search!  And it’s THE traffic source responsible for bringing many people the majority of their search engine traffic.  So why would you bypass the opportunity to let the oh-so-powerful Google know who likes your content?

But if you’re expecting some miraculous increase in your search engine traffic overnight, I think you’ll be disappointed.  But maybe Google will prove me wrong.

I really think this was more about Google trying to match the success of Facebook’s “Like” button.  How they’ll use the data and how much of an impact it will have on SEO, remains to be seen.

So what do you guys think?  Am I the only one tired of all the social sharing noise and the hype that comes with it?  Maybe I’m just getting too antisocial for this social world we live in now. 😀

What do you think of Google Plus One?  Did you install the button yet?

Question for you Lisa: I added the Sociable Plugin to my WordPress site, and when I click +1, it shows ‘1’ for a moment, and then the triangle with the !, and resets to 0 while the button tints to red. It give a few reasons why that can happen, but I’m baffled. I made a blank html with the bare bones tags and used it on that, same result.

I’ve heard about other people having the same problem. I thought maybe it was because I was testing it on my local WAMP server and it not being attached to a domain name or something, but I’m really strapped for ideas at this point. Do you have any idea what might be happening?

Google Plus One has became more popular among the site publishers than before. The one reason I see is the effect of plus ones in search results. FB like doesn’t provide a way to recommend sites via search (SERPs). This also helps sites get higher ranking for some search query, this improvement can be monitor in Google Webmaster Tool

I certainly hope the +1 button doesn’t have affect SEO! My head will explode with the amount of boring social buttons coming out and the will it or won’t it help my rankings, to me this is a replacement for the failed google buzz button, trying to compete with facebook and aimed at the SEO hungry people who will just rush out and install. The Google +One button has me wondering if it will end up like FB and their like button. So I support their initiatives when I agree with them, but I find they try to make things too simple for basic users and super complex for power users.

It is annoying, which is why I only add share buttons for websites I find are actually used regularly by a mass of people, or at least the audience I’m targetting. Which, as of right now, is only 3 social media platforms. I don’t like to clutter my website with stuff that is hardly used. If that negatively impacts my traffic, so what? I’ll take the clean and simple approach.

Now, I like Google. So I support their initiatives when I agree with them, but I find they try to make things too simple for basic users and super complex for power users. Like the code they provide to add the plus one icon is really simple, but it messes up my website design and I have no idea why since that small little bit of code has a lot of their code in the backend. That annoys me. And while I could probably figure out why, I can’t justify the effort until “+1” really takes off. We just wanted to test it out, and gave up before it could even have a chance.

The Google +1 button is similar to the facebook like button. However, I think the +1 button will dominate as the Google+ network grows.

Also, I found out that you can even buy +1 now on sites like http://plussem.com and http://plusonefans.com

What do you think about this?

Yes, it is really annoying there are so many of them. They look bad on your website/pages when you have to list Facebook/Twitter/Google +1 and other ones. Do people really want to click on these buttons on websites? We have a lot of real estate buyers on our website, and they are all looking at houses, but when we added the Facebook Like, there don’t seem to be a lot of people using them. We’ll add in the Google +1 and see if it does anything!

Maybe there is a downside that our pages are getting more crowded and the real estate users will get more annoyed on our site, and therefore the user experience may get worse.

I have added the +1 like many other buttons. Not so sure of the full value of it, but i would not want to be left out even in the least. Also, adding many social icons to a website is all about giving people more options when they visit your site. They can be well organized, and look pretty decent.

Google PLus is going to change the way we behave online. I think that plus basically brings all/most of Google’s products under one virtual roof. I see more a purpose adding/plussing something versus liking. I have facebook but uses it mabe once per month. I use google everyday.

You should install google + 1, while blogger and website should not left behind. This is a trend that we should not give up. Google + 1 been predict to be a tools that will help in SEO or webmaster tools.
So is good to start now.
Either two thing to allow you to less worry about adding too much.
One is use plug in for those button and use google analytic to track it.
Second is choose only two which most profitable to your website.

I think that when others are new in the industry, they look for ways to help promote their websites — thus social sharing. While it may seem tedious, it is still helpful for others just starting out. Your website offers great information for everyone, especially those just beginning an internet business. I appreciate what you offer to the industry, Lisa.

I added the +1 button to my site today. So far, I’m still at zero, despite that my site gets a fair amount of traffic (but less since Google’s recent rerank). I think one problem with this button is that most general Web users aren’t even going to know what it is for. Even if they DO know what it’s for are most people really going to want to create a Google profile just so they can +1 someone’s site? I’m guessing probably not. However, if this catches on with the general public (meaning people other than webmasters) then it might be useful…

That’s how I feel too Angela, nevertheless it’s amazing how Google’s tools influence us Webmasters and Bloggers to add them even if we aren’t sure how effective they will be. That’s how powerful Google is. 🙂

I certainly hope the +1 button doesn’t have affect SEO! That would be a nightmare– and pretty much the end of any kind of Google objectivity.

I’m also pretty damn tired of all the social media stuff. I know that not everyone uses Facebook, but really, the Facebook Like button does all it needs to. What other sharing services do people really use? I put things on Twitter, I hit the “like” button if I want my Facebook followers to read it, and that’s about it.

While it still remains to be seen how effective or not it will become – SE’s do pay huge amount of attention to social signals and ignoring this one can be quite a mistake.

Will it work or not – ignoring it simply not an option if you want to succeed with your site. Can always remove it later, if required
