So you want to know more about the chica behind this site, huh?
Cool!
Well, let’s get the formalities out of the way, shall we?
My name is Lisa Irby [extends right hand for virtual handshake] and I am an online entrepreneur.
You can see how I make money online here.
I also teach a course on building a website and earning with affiliate marketing. You can see all my courses here.
There’s nothing better than getting paid to do what you enjoy, and fortunately I’ve found a way to turn online teaching into a full-time income thanks to affiliate marketing, Google AdSense and sales of my own products.
But don’t get it twisted! It’s hard work, and there’s a lot about this biz people don’t talk about enough! I discuss all that here.
I absolutely love sharing what I learn along the way and I want you to benefit from those lessons too.
But before I go any further, make sure you subscribe to my email list so you don’t miss any of my new posts and exclusive tips…
Who’s Lisa?
My personality is best described as complex. 🙂
I am a classic ambivert, which means I have both introverted and extroverted qualities, depending on the people and situation.
I can be extremely social (and admittedly a bit goofy) when I’m around people I am close to, but I also need my space more than the average person.
This T-shirt from Zazzle describes me to a “Tee!” (Get it?) 🙂
I’m also a very self-motivated person who loves gadgets, is moderately tech savvy, loves to laugh, bowl, joke and dabble with music arrangement.
The Beginning
So how did I get started with all this? (You can listen to the story on my first podcast if you wish.)
In January 1998, I was studying Business/HR at Truman State University in the small, college town of Kirksville, Missouri.
I was one of those students who was just focused on graduating and getting that diploma.
I had no idea what I wanted to do in the real world, but I did know that I loved computers and being on the Internet.
Little did I know, I was about to embark on a journey that would lead me to my calling…
Teaching.
I remember spending my evenings in the university library teaching myself HTML when I probably should have been studying for exams.
Before I knew it, I was making money by building one-page websites (yes, one-page) and monetizing them with Amazon books and any other products I could find that had affiliate programs attached.
I racked in about $6,000 in nine months. Not bad for a broke college student, eh?
Going Forward
For the next few years, I continued building mini-sites/doorway pages that promoted various products for affiliate commissions.
Search engine optimization was a breeze compared to what it is today, so I was able to rank for some pretty competitive phrases in a matter of days. Believe it or not, I ranked #1 for “home employment” for a short while.
(Ahhhh, those were the days!)
Of course, that party ended pretty quickly, and I concluded that system was not going to provide me with any kind of stable, long-term income.
My Strategy Changes
By 2002, I had grown tired of my temporary income solutions. If I was ever going to quit my 9 to 5 job, I needed to build something with staying power.
That’s when 2 Create a Website was born and within two years this site matched my 9 to 5 income. By the 4th year, my Internet income was four times my 9 to 5 largely thanks to affiliate marketing and AdSense.
So I packed up my cubicle and began my journey to the land of self employment.
It’s still amazing to me how a very simple site grew into something that has allowed me to work for myself since 2006. So here I am sharing my advice with the world.
How I Can Help You
On this blog you’ll find a selection of articles related to creating, promoting and monetizing blogs and websites.
You can keep up with my advice here by subscribing to my RSS feed or following me on Twitter.
I can also be found chatting it up on YouTube, Facebook, or Google Plus or administering my forum, WebsiteBabble.com.
In other words, I’m pretty much everywhere! 🙂

Hi,
Great site with great advise!
I am a website designer in Miami Fl. (305)
I use Joomla alot but I am new to affiliate marketing. There are so many techniques that I’m confused about what would work with the group of sites I own “and” what would work for my website design clients.
Any advise would be great… Thanks scott@lightspeedesign.com
Joey says
Hey, Scott. Although I don’t know anything about Joomla, WordPress is the standard when it comes to affiliate marketing and things of the like when it comes to setting up a site on your own domain. I don’t think they let you use affiliate links on the free version of WordPress.
Scott says
Hi Joey,
I have an unlimited hosting acct with about 10 Joomla sites running. In my view Joomla is just an advanced version of WP. It’s a full CMS but easy to use. I also have many website clients that would like to start using PPC and affiliate marketing on there sites. I have one client that has a shopping cart – CMS that gets 35-50 hits daily and makes about 1.5 to 2 sales a week. I’m sure with a little advise I can get 100-200 visits a day for my client. I also want to create new pages on there site with some sort of affiliate marketing to leverage there traffic. Hoping Lisa or any of the experts on the site can help.
Thanks – scott@lightspeedesign.com

Hey, Lisa. I love the realistic approach you take when it comes to making money online. I’m also a huge fan of your Youtube videos (and your little theme song), which is how I first came to learn about you. I am surprised you’re not a guru in the internet marketing space. You would be a good one to follow. Have you considered launching your own product on Clickbank?

Hello,
I would like to know if I need a business license for my website?
My website is a music search site & will soon be a music e-commerce site through affiliate programs (iTunes/Amazon).
I am also hoping to make income through Google Adsense.
I reside in CA.
In the future, I will be hiring people to run the content.
Yvette Diaz says
Also, I forgot to mention, that I in the near future, I will be charging artists to promote them on my site.
lisa says
Nope, no license needed. As you grow you may want to think of incorporating but it’s not necessary.

Joyann fergus says
Well let me say, that I have been working on the internet for years and years, and have not made any money. Its all a trick, that is what it is. So stop telling people lies and tell them the truth.
lisa says
With all due respect, Joyann I don’t get your logic. Just because you failed, I’m lying? I failed at many things in life but I don’t call those who succeed liars. Maybe it wasn’t for me or maybe I needed direction/help to figure out where I went wrong. If you needed help, I would have personally loved to help you and maybe we could figure out where you went wrong, but disrespecting someone on their blog and calling them a liar without the facts is not cool.
Clearly I’ll never convince you and that’s fine. I understand the skepticism. My friends and family were too until I quit my job in 2006. It took me years as well. Do you know how many sites I created that failed miserably? But I didn’t go around calling the successful people liars. I learned from my mistakes, created 2createawebsite.com and started following others who are succeeding and that’s when my situation turned around.
And thanks for having my back, Elusiverick. 😉 Not everyone will be convinced.
Joyann fergus says
Now lisa, you know you ain’t making no money on the internet. Why you lying to the people. Come on. There is no money to be made on the internet. Why you fooling the people?
lisa says
I really hope this is a joke, Joyann. If you’d take just a bit of time to go through my posts and videos, you will see screenshots, videos, and checks. And if you think there is no money to be made online I’m not sure where you’ve been over the past 15 years. Not only am I making a living but I have proudly helped several friends in my city achieve success as well. I suppose I can understand the skepticism, but to say “there is no money to be made on the internet” really makes me wonder where you’ve been and who’ve you’ve been listening to.
Ever heard of the Affiliate Summit? It’s a conference that meets twice per year with people just like me and many of them earn a living as well. So I’m not alone. My dignity is too high for me to “fool people” and quite frankly it’s insulting — especially since I do my best to help people AVOID getting scammed. Those who know me and follow my blog know that lying is NOT my style.

Hi Lisa,
I decided to use Ad Sense again on my blog since I’ve noticed ads placed in the RSS feeds of a few ministries I subscribe to.
I’m not looking to get rich, but hopefully over time, to earn enough money to help pay off my student loan debt rather quickly, if I can ever earn figures like you’ve shown in your videos.
I look forward to reading more from you.

How refreshing! Yes, I am NOT going to fill out all that info so I can leave a comment, something bloggers should encourage by “ease of use.” But, do tell me, Lisa, how I can proceed when I feel the landmines all about. For instance, I’ve had my blog up since July 4, 2010 (more than one Independence Day) and right now I quake with the thought many of my pictures/photos I believed were allowed if I simply gave attribution; now I fear copyright issues all over the place…What am I to do? I make no money on this new blog, am spending inordinate time doing it (that’s OK but I want it productive) and now I shiver in me timbers” (Oooopppss copyright problem) fearing the law will be after me. Do other bloggers worry about such stuff? What’s the alternative? Just my own generic, vanilla pix? (Take out Biddy and Alexa Jayne Mansfield blockbuster picture? in recent post)…Thanks for your honesty; your blog is very user-friendly and interesting.
MJ - Total Lisa Fan says
Colleen, there are lots of free photo sharing sites. Flikr for one, there is Dreamstime and Stock Exchange, etc. You then use their photos and attibrute to them as they ask. But you can’t just go to Google images and swipe any photo you like or see.
You’ll need to either: 1. Go to each of those pics and find the owners and ASK their permission for the photos you currently have, or 2. Remove all of the pics and begin with the ones that you HAVE permission to use, such as the sites mentioned above.
I have no financial stake in any of the sites I just named, they are off the top of my head and wanted you to know so you can stop worrying. 🙂
Check out Lisa’s posts on SBI websites, if you haven’t already, then you may understand why your blog is moving so slowly.
Best wishes with your new blog!
With peace,
MJ
MJ - Total Lisa Fan says
Colleen, I also meant to add that you can just go to any search engine and type in ‘Royalty Free Images” (without the quotes) and you should get a nice list of photo places you can use. Sometimes they are absolutely free and A LOT of pics are just a simple little dollar to own for your website/blog.
I also had a look at your blog. You’d make better money if you just stuck to ONE specific topic. Just an honest opinion. 🙂
Again, best wishes,
MJ

Lisa! I’ve just discovered you today and you as anyone else had encouraged me to try my best to improve my recently opened blog, I just was watching a video where you said that you won about 6 thousand dollars or something and it really motivated me. All the things you said, I’ve really thought of that but up to now I’m really going to try it out! I would say that right now I have a theme blog and I really love it so I always try to give good content, and now I’m just trying to improve the traffic so that I could win big bucks! I would really appreciate if you would give a quick visit to my humble blog and give me a quick review, please!!! =D Hope you have the time for one of your new fans! Haha! Thank you so much!
Thiago says
One thing in common that all successful bloggers share is the fact that they’ve all gone through mistakes and years of trial and error to end up where they are today. Like Lisa sais, it’s all about the journey. The average time to make money in this industry usually is about 5 years. Joel Comm, Zac Johnson and many other bloggers will tell you the same story. There’s so much to learn it’s unimaginable at the beginning, but eventually if you keep on going, you’ll make it whilst others who gave up won’t.
Keith Babby says
Well, I guess, i can only hope that Lisa will read this and respondl. I am looking to start a socail networking site like Facebook ro Myspace, but I know exactly what I would want to do with it. It would be music and other artestsl. Each artists coudl create their own page and personalize it to their choosing, background, pictures, everyhing. There also would be player on there to listen to a few select tracks. The Newly designed myspace absolutely killed myspace. It’s horrible and nodody want to use and many artist are just leaving. It was THE most effective marketing tool and many bands got found this way. Given my little amount of computer understanding, is it suggested, I go back to school for a degree in computer science?

Hello Lisa, I stumbled onto your video after typing in making money. The first thing I thought was “Ok another home made video about making money.” I assume my interest keep me there because earlier this year I purchased a Money Making CD/Readable set that I actually read through from front to back. I did get excited about some of the concepts and websites that were taught but I only heard a voice and they would show the cursor moving on a computer screen, but enough of that. After listening and going to your web site I found myself listening to your videos from 3years ago. The excitement has come back but I did not pay $149 to get it. I plan on reading more as a beginner and unlike most people I do have some patients but I also know that you get out of what you put in to it. I am already $-149 in the negative but my willingness is there. For some reason I fell more excepted into your videos because they are down to earth and straight from the hip even if it points out negativity in a company or product. Thanks for pulling me back in and I have not even spent a dime. Keep up the good work.

I jumped in too quickly building my site. It’s not really what I want. The content is close. But, the design is not quite there. I wanted to grab the domain before someone else got it.
Anyway… Thank’s for all the helpful info. 1 question: I like the social networking links that open a new page to comment or the like. I have a headache from searching to no avail. Any tips?
Thanks.

Hi Lisa,
I have been watching a few of your videos. You are a very pretty lady indeed. I just wanted to mention that the lighting on your face is creating shadow. I am a professional videographer and think that you might benefit from doing a three point lighting system.
Keep the light that you normally have on you (key light) but add another light on the opposite side further away or at a lower wattage (its called a fill light). This will give you a softer look and lessen the shodows on your face.
Adding a hair light to shine on the back part of your head on one side creates separation from you and the background.
Yeah, you might well already know this sort of thing. Or, you may not care; nonetheless, I have enjoyed spending time on your site.
blessings,
JP

Hi Lisa,
First of all I want to say that I think you do a great job on your video’s and on your site explaining your point so that it is easy for most anyone to understand.
That leads me to the reason I’m writing … and I’ll be as brief as possible.
I’m putting a small group of 4 online marketers together to participate in a JV deal whereby we will all support and promote each other in weekly product promotions using my membership site as a platform. 4 people — 1 week each month — where we will all promote your product — if it’s your week.
The 4 marketers I’m considering besides yourself are … Kevin ‘Mr. EBay’ Johnson, Elizabeth ‘Diva’ Ashe, and Daegan Smith. I don’t know if you know these folks … and I’m fairly flexible in the event we need to substitute a marketer.
Please take a look at my site that will go live on Friday the 18th … I’m just putting the finishing touches on the site now … and I’m confident it will be up Friday. http://www.GreenLeafMedical.org/Business.htm
You could earn $5000 per sale … on just 1 of the monetized items … there are 3 other monetized items: $50 bucks, $10 bucks and a monthly recurring $10 buck membership.
Sorry for the length of this letter…
Please check out the site and get back to me ASAP for a link and answers to any questions you have.
I believe collectively we could really help a whole lot of folks.
Looking forward to meeting you and talking to you further.
Please call me anytime … 650-468-7390 — I would love to speak with you anytime.
